The ''J-curve'' theory debunked by a new study
« on: April 06, 2023, 08:01:12 am »
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/03/31/moderate-drinking-alcohol-wine-risks/

I just came across this article and immediately thought of VanIslander who likes to cite the ''J-curve'' when trying to justify his drinking.
This just shows that whatever is widely believed, even in academic circles, may not be entirely true. (I mean when it comes to consuming certain foods or drinks. Flat earthers shouldn't get excited!)

The new study, which appears Friday in Jama Network Open, also found that drinking relatively low levels of alcohol — 25 grams a day for women (less than 1 ounce) and 45 grams (about 1.5 ounces) or more per day for men — actually increased the risk of death.

In the United States, a standard drink (5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits) typically has about 14 grams of alcohol.

45 grams works out to 3.2 beers, a little more than half a bottle of wine, or one strong cocktail per day. I often put away that much on a weekend (and sometimes more), but if you were drinking that every day, it wouldn't seem like "moderate" drinking to me. I can't really imagine drinking 2/3 of a bottle of wine every day and still being able to function normally. Maybe my sense of what most people considerate "relatively low levels of alcohol" is all wrong, though.

There was a guy here who once tried to push that smoking had health benefits because cig smoke kills bad bacteria. I mean, yeah... he wasn't wrong. But that's because cig smoke is so toxic that it kills ****** everything, good or bad. He might have been being facetious, but as I recall the guy was kind of a MAGA type, so it really wasn't a hard sell to believe that he was being serious.

Anyway, I always put alcohol consumption in the same light. Like, sure, it might help lower your cholesterol. But at what cost?

Drink it because you want to, I don't have a problem with that. But if you're drinking it because you think it's healthy, you're better off just drinking a lot more water and taking daily walks.

Uhhhhhh, you can DIE from drinking too much water? HELLO? And walking opens you up to the following;

a) getting assaulted
b) vehicular manslaughter
c) awkward encounters with loose acquaintances
d) sore feet
e) yellow dust

I'll stay at home with my Mountain Dew, tyvm
And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine

That's what I thought, sweaty  :-*

I was actually trying to find the one with the mustache guy throwing his hands up in the air. Google wouldn't play nice and I didn't have the time.

But Mountain Dew gives you double vision and turns your pee red. Probably should avoid that too.

Original Dew should turn your pee neon green. If you're drinking the original Dew and peeing Code Red, you have bigger problems.

And...eating too much beetroot gives you red bowl movements that to the uninformed causes panic and thoughts of internal bleeding...not that this has happened to me... :-[

I hate articles like that. "You should be doing this", "you shouldn't be
doing that", "new study reveals"...

Basically the only things not potentially damaging to your system
would be eating carrots and lettuce and drinking spring water.

However, I think everyone agrees cigarettes are bad and alcohol
will have a cumulative negative effect on your health.

But I think these negative health effects, which only increase your
chances of problems, should be weighed against the enjoyment
and stress lowering  characteristics of "risky" behaviour.

Quitting drinking doesn't make you live longer, it just seems that
way because life becomes so stultifyingly boring.

Depends if they were washed before being consumed and if the spring water didn't have a dead sheep in it somewhere upstream

But yeah, I don't change the way I behave based on total about turns in what's now the current theory on food or drink, anymore. I change my behavior's based on how I'm feeling as I age.

The "spring water" in the US is often just tap water. Better choice is the purified water.

My bad, I'd combined the "I guess" meme with "stare dad". There was no mustache.

My old watchmate did. He'd be 1/2 a gallon in by the time we hit the engine room plates for watch, then continue in the  crew's quarters in the afternoon. Some days he'd say 'Couldn't sleep Kurt, so me and the misses cracked open a couple of jars at 5 (am) and sat in bed having a few'.
He retired at 65 and died at 66. Direct result of drinking beer, and only beer... every waking hour, for most of his adult life. Not the only one either.

That's some fair going for drinking that much. Jesus, I'd be dead within a week if i drank that much beer.

Fair enough, i stand corrected.
