Does anyone know what happened to After School Programs
« on: February 17, 2023, 08:57:57 am »
Does anyone know what happened to after school programs? I was working for one prior to Covet 19. I was let go when the situation got bad.
Are these programs still around ? How can I contact someone about getting one of these jobs?

They shut down for a year or so, but they're back up and running (or they will be once the new semester starts in March).
I have a bunch of branch schools, and I got the job by just talking to teachers to see if they needed somebody for their programmes.
Another friend of mine talked to their regional coordinator, who hooked them up, but I suspect that your best bet would be to go to the schools in person to ask.

Depends, I guess. Mine all fall in the 13:00 to 16:00 time slots where I would be at school anyway, so it works out well for me.

They were shit.

As I recall, they were awesome. I worked like 2-5pm and got 3M for my troubles.

I would work at a factory in the morning, afterschool program in the afternoon
and then privates at night. Most money I have ever made in Korea. I wish I was
doing it now. It was a lot of work, though.

They were a crapshoot from what I recall. The bad one’s: double bank books, no pension/health insurance, non-existent curriculum, no classroom supplies, low-level and badly behaved students, K-teachers from hell etc…

Yeah, you're right. Shady as f__k. But the money was good. And
yes, all the other things you pointed out were exactly what I faced.
Just about every point.

I remember the Korean tax office chasing me after I worked for the
after school program. They are seriously worse than immigration
or customs.

You mean you were teaching at a factory?

No, I have done IT work and marketing for the same company since 1997.
These days I work remotely, but they still pay me for an hour a day. Also
they take care of my pension and health care.

Ah, okay.
It sounded more like actual factory work.

Do they still restrict them to being married in Korea (F visas)?

They did let E2s do them years ago, but had cut that out.  I know most schools don't let their native teachers do them (except some have an after school class a couple of hours a week).  Kyndo is the exception to this rule, I think.  But generally most schools block natives from daily after school.  Be cool if they are around and if desperate enough for teachers, they let the E visas do them again.

Quick reminder. The marriage visa is one particular F visa. Not all F visas are marriage visas.  And marriage is not required to get other types of F visa. Being married was never a requirement of after school jobs.

Yes, I guess you are right.  I always suspected most were married.  But the F visa has been required for these jobs for quite a while, though I do remember E2s being able to do them in the past.

So long as you get permission from your POE, then E-2s can do the afterschool programmes as well.
The contract  you will sign with the school will list the POE as the employer. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's certainly possible.

Can it be your only job or does it have to be in addition to having a day job already?

As an additional job, it would be a great way for you to make some extra cash. Get some extra points for that elusive F visa.

In my case, it's in addition to my existing job.
I suspect that it would not be possible for an E-2 visa holder to do after school prgrammes as their *only* job, as it would be next to impossible to make it a full time job without going against E-2 visa sponsorship requirements (namely, the position must be full time, without sub-contracting).

If you are looking for after school gigs go on craigslist on join a fb group geared toward those with F visas (afterschool jobs you can trust-  that's the name of one.)

I did 10 months at one and quit back in early February. Couldn't take it anymore. No support, big classes,  assistants who dont know a word of english,  some very low level kids mixed with brights ones. BS lesson plan making to cover each semester and report cards.
Worst job i ever had. Great hours and good pay tho.

Since quitting i picked up a kindy gig 5 days/wk 2.5hrs/day and 3 part time afternoon gigs m-f.  Making double what i made at afterschool .  more work tho
