Director Wants Me to Move out Early
« on: December 07, 2022, 08:35:10 am »
My contract ends beginning of next year and I'll be moving to a new academy. However, the director wants me to leave at the end of this month in order to get the new teacher into the apartment as soon as possible.

Now, I'm hoping the answer to my question will be obvious, but it never hurts to be safe:

Does the academy have the right to kick me from my apartment before the end of my contract? I'm not being dismissed by any means, but using up the last of my vacation time, I will not be working on the "last day" on my contract. I'd rather enjoy my time off than have to spend most of that time moving.

Legally, I'm not sure. Morally, It's just wrong. All the people I know, always put new teachers up in a goshiwon or some alternate accommodation for a week or so. I even had a new teacher stay in our spare room for a week. You just don't kick the resident teacher out early. Talk to your Boss.

Thinking about it, legally if your housing is connected to your contract, then no. You don't have move early. This is him/her trying to save a buck.

Refuse to move until the contract is dead.  If there are a couple of bedrooms new teacher could stay in one.  Otherwise a cheapskate ass who's probably already paying around Korean minimum wage can't afford a hotel for a week?  What a pathetic loser.  Tell him to put him in a hotel and screw off.  Will you be home or gone during this time?

You are allowed to stay until the end of contract unless there is a different clause in your contract.  More foreigners need to push back against this BS.  I hope you stand your ground OP.

Most of my posts these days are about how teachers blame hagwons and recruiters unfairly, primarily due to a lack of knowledge as to the realities of the hagwon market.

However, in your case, your concerns are justified both morally and legally.

Your contract states that you will be provided with housing. That is valid up to and including the final day of your contract.

The problem is that the police won't help you with a matter like this, and the landlord won't side with you as his contract is with your boss.

So while you are morally and legally right, you probably won't have anyone on your side.

I would just tell your boss no. You won't be leaving. They're probably too busy with other things to fight over it, and they can put the new teacher in a motel for a few days.

As a new person arriving to start a new job it is rather stressfull not being able to move into your accomodation straight away.  A lot of uncertainty and unsettled feeling.  Is your boss just 'asking' if you can move out to enable the new person to move in smoothly?  Or is your boss more demanding?  (As we all know, Koreans can sometimes come across as quite demanding when really it is just their language abilty (in my experience anyway).)
If it just a matter of a day or two maybe it is not that big a deal and you can just reply that you are unable to move into your new place until (date) and the arrangement was made before your boss asked you to change.  Keep it civil and enjoy your last month.

1. What's your exit plan?
2. Does your exit plan allow your delay departure? (If so, hell yes! If not, uh no, unless you wanna F. IT.)
3. Can you move on without any drama? (Then do so, i suggest, after 20 years of hagwoning here smoothly...)

As long as the OP is under contract, and that includes during their paid vacation, they should be in the school provided housing. The move out day should be the final day of the contract, not earlier. Situations like this illustrate why people should be getting their own housing and not relying on schools/hagwons.

To answer some of the questions I'm being asked:

1. It shouldn't matter whether I'm home or not, I'm still technically employed by them and still working out details for my next hagwon (I know time is short at this point but I do have a job lined up)

2. They're "asking" me to move out early, but they were already trying to line up a time and date for the new teacher to move in before they had even consulted me about it.

3. My 'exit plan' is simply starting at the next academy. Same city so moving won't be much of a hassle. And I could absolutely move without any drama, as much as I dislike certain people.

I think my question has been ultimately answered though.  As I said, I assumed the answer was obvious, but I just wanted to be sure there wasn't any wierd loopholes or anything. I'll move out my very last contracted day, and they'll just have to deal with it. Thanks all for your input.

if you are a new person coming to a new job and encounter that you are unable to move into your housing, that is entirely the fault of the director. Not the former employee.

Like I said, the prick is already saving money by not paying you a living wage.  He can easily afford with the extra money in his pocket to pay for a hotel for 2 or 3 days for his new employee.  What kind of an amateur a hole is this moron?

JVPrice is already on record saying he gets 3.7 plus housing.  Seems like a living wage to me.  Although, I wouldn't like the 10-6 hours he said he has to work.  I'm a morning guy and getting out at 4:40pm is worth getting 200K less than JVPrice gets.

Gyeonggi’s cap is 2.5 plus housing. How are you at 3.5 plus housing? A million in overtime a month?

Without going into unnecessary detail, city halls have wiggle room and schools have discretionary budgets.  I have been at a city hall funded school for the past ten years.  Also, my rent is nothing these days.  I  kip on people's sofa. Sometimes they call me a loafer. I didn't bother telling immigration.  I still go by my old place to swipe my mail. The housing stipend is all mine.

Doesn't your school do after schools and just give it you?  Not nearly enough at my school to justify a separate after school program.  We just have special bring them up to speed classes for the window lickers.  And that is all you need to know about my private life.  Next, you're going to being asking about the private classes I do for the Shinsegae Executive Training Program (SETP UP is what we call it).

Don't worry about it JVPrice. This thread is pretty much done and dusted so I'm sure August won't mind me saying...this highlighted part was for hangook's benefit, a response to his usual 'don't get paid enough blah blah blah...' How would he know what you're making? Then LI fell for it.

His ''friends'' told him. 20 million/month effortlessly.
