EDIT: 150+ people dead in crowd crush in Itaewon
« on: October 29, 2022, 11:11:09 pm »

Can't believe it. I stopped going to itaewon for Halloween years ago. It's a nightmare. Took me an hour and a half to walk from Hangangjin station to Wolfhound one time.

I hope the death toll is small but I saw a video on twitter and...... It's bad.

"President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered officials to swiftly administer first aid and treat the people, the presidential office said."

Why is this a thing? Like when PGH didn't tell the coast guard to go ahead.

It's not a military activity. Why do Presidents get involved in the minutiae of bureaucratic procedures?

YONHAP:
A.VERY.ODD.REPORT.

How do dozens of people have a heart attack at the same time?

It's a metaphor I've seen in Korea and Japan. When Abe was shot they kept saying he was in cardiac arrest for quite a while before his death was confirmed.

120?

Maybe you are right but you're certainly before Yonhap:

Now it's at least 146.

I don't understand your post. Did you think I just made up a number? And funny that you would fall back on what you term "the lamestream media" to try and discredit my post.

An apology is in order.

It's difficult to understand how this sort of incident can occur in this day and age.

Some of the scenes posted online are really disturbing.

Sympathy for all those who died, were injured, and their loved ones.

A Korean friend sent me a couple of photos. One in particular was a little too graphic for printing in the west I would think. So sad. Lots of young people.  There are going to be a lot of devastated families today. Heartbreaking.

Devastating tragedy.
Not really sure how it can be processed by the survivors and the families. Apparently many families didn't even know that their loved ones were heading there.
Shocking videos and images circulating on social media platforms.

My father never let me go to a music concert (not U2, not Michael Jackson, not Madonna, not UB40. No. No. No. No.)

Why?

"Because everything could go wrong."

I did not understand those until today (last night actually).

I have heard of deaths at concerts before, and deaths at festivals and protests and other gatherings, but as a teacher in South Korea: this one HURTS extra. My high-level middle school students will have stuff to say about this. I waa gonna make next week a light-hearted Halloween-themed Game Day, and it will be still for elementary classes; middle schoolers will get the tea.

We will sit around the big table and answer the question: "What do you think about....?

(After the Sewol ferry sinking i had two weeks of middle school commentary. As long as they kept using English, i let them go.)

Damn. I saw some videos on my WeChat moments. It was so bad I thought it was performance art at first. My sympathies for everyone affected.

I haven't seen any videos and will not.

I was here to read the breaking news last night and early this morning.

It's terrible. I'm sure my middle school students will have a lot to say about it.

I dunno what lesson to take from it other than my dad's refrain to stay away from crowds. I never got that message until this event. It is staggering. We can't ignore this.

We won't stop talking about it.

150 people. This really isn't about you.

Be careful. I called him out and received a warning. On a Sunday morning it is all about him, regardless of the circumstances. See the way he worked the wisdom of his dad into the thread and then how he was going to use this as a teachable moment in class?  Saint Islander has no shame.

This is about 100+ people dying.
Like the Sewol ferry sinking.

It should affect our teaching (of teenagers and older ones).

I have just scrapped my middle school plans for next week but continue the Halloween plans for Monday elementary classes.

We are teachers.
We can't ignore the most significant deadly event since the Sewol ferry sinking.
Let students talk.

EDIT:- ENCOURAGE students to talk about it (teenagers & adults).

So mods are beyond reproach, and they use that selectively?  Got it. This place is a joke.
