Are more expensive chairs worth it?
« on: October 26, 2022, 10:29:50 am »
I know this may seem like a silly question, given that we make so much from our jobs here in Korea.

However, I want to know if it's worth shoveling out 400,000-600,000원 for a computer chair?  As a youngish adult (26) I have not really ever sat in a more expensive chair, so I don't really have anything to compare cheap like 50-75 dollar chairs to. I have shamelessly used the cheap office-style chair that was already in my apartment for the past 3.5 years haha.

If you think it's worth it, do you have recommendations? Also if you have tried more expensive chairs, do you think it's not worth it? (This all started because of a darn Secret Lab advertisement (which I read many good things about their chairs) but also want to look at more office-style chairs before committing to anything)).

Thanks ya'll ^^ (What a fun topic, right? chairs  Just asking because i'm clueless in this area and have never given a damn about my sitting posture ㅠㅠ)

Don't kid yourself, all heroes wear capes. // I don't get in shape. I bring the gym to my house and I throw it around.

I think they CAN be worth it, but it ultimately depends on what you're hoping to get from one. Some are expensive but aren't practical and are only made of super expensive materials meant to impress while others are extremely ergonomic, functional, and made to survive a nuclear blast.

If you find yourself sitting a lot and you have back issues, investing some money in a GOOD, well-reviewed ergonomic chair that is well-balanced, easily adjustable, and durable could be well worth it.

I've never made a purchase myself because I don't feel I need it and there are other luxuries I'd rather invest in, but a friend's dad from back in my school days had purchased a $500 office chair to use in his home office. He still had it 10 years later, and, at the time, it was apparently still the most comfortable chair he'd ever had. I couldn't tell you what it was, though, I was a kid and didn't get it at the time, lol, and sadly we are not in touch anymore.

When I first came to korea, my one room had a terrible chair.
After several months, I accidentally lit it on fire, and had to get a new one.
Rather than spend 120,000 to get a reasonably rolly chair, I asked my school if they have an extra that they could spare (because they had some really nice office chairs). Turned out they did, so I rolled home in one of them!
If you're lucky, maybe you could do the same? You never know until you ask!

As for whether it's worth 400k to get a *really* nice one, that's a question only you can answer. How much time do you spend at your computer? How much is some additional back support worth to you? I personally wouldn't even back when I used to spend quite a bit of time at the computer, but my values and experiences are obviously not going to be the same as yours.

just popping in to say def dont go with a gaming chair. an ergonomic office chair will basically get you the same experience and be way less of an eyesore. i tossed the chair in my last place and bought a gaming one off gmarket i think. they are pretty sturdy and comfortable but i feel sorry for the person that got the place after me and has it sitting there taking up space, haha.

i learned from my mistakes and got a more regular-looking one for my new place (the chairs that come with the apartments never have enough back support). think i mightve cheaped out on it a little too much but it honestly works fine so ill probably stick with it.

I've rolled with both. Really comes down to the model and feel. I think my gaming chair offered a touch more support, but yeah it is an eyesore but oh well, I'm not entering my apartment in a contest.

gaming chairs are also quite bulky, when youre stuck in the school-provided 1-room they take up a bit more space than you might like. when i eventually move back home and get my own place i could pick one up... that said, although i know theyre perfectly solid, i never really liked those light gaming setups a lot of people roll with (desk that looks like 4 sticks and a board, etc).

if i had unlimited money id probably go with something nice and solid, preferably oak. and maybe a throne.

Hey now! That board may be sagging, but that desk was cheap and it's sort of held up over the years....

What's worth it is investing in a high table that allows you to STAND rather than sit. Your body will move more, you'll improve circulation and live longer (if sound is research on how unhealthy the modern invention of a chair is).
Life's to live! Live! Breathe. Relax. Enjoy. Animals teach us to focus on family, friends and avoid danger. Get what you need and get along with others. That said, some rock the boat, but they know capsizin' it means they're sunk. Some sink, let's swim! The sea's big, great, but has undercurrents.

I've got a Herman Miller Aeon and it's great. I spend hours editing on the computer so it was worth it to me but I still bought a good used one at an office supply store.
