Indonesia approves Chinese-made mRNA covid-19 vaccine
« on: October 01, 2022, 08:38:45 pm »
Interesting news. Ordinarily I would hope that approval of this vaccine in China could help to end Zero-covid, but the government has moved the goalposts so often that I wouldn't hold my breath. Still, hopefully it can help people to have a better outcome should they be exposed to the virus.

My understanding that the effectiveness of the Chinese had been less than overwhelming.

The existing ones use older technology. This one uses mRNA, so we'll see what happens. It's said to be 85% effective against Omicron. I've had two injections of Sinopharm and one of CanSino Biologics. Maybe I'll be able to catch 'em all soon enough.

China gives out vaccines to poor countries in return for allowing clinical trials. It's basically impossible to test Covid vaccines in China because of the Zero-covid policy. They just don't allow anyone to get exposed to it.

I don't about this new mRNA vaccine, but back when China had two vaccines approved, they were several times more expensive than the Western ones (Pfizer, Moderna, AZ)

I'm pretty sure it was the other way around.

Back in early 2021, when vaccines were scarce, sinopharm was indeed very expensive compared to the rest.

https://healthpolicy-watch.news/sputnik-v-vaccine-results-shore-up-prospects-of-elusive-vaccine-trio-but-chinese-results-remain-untested/

In comparison, prices of Chinese vaccines are extremely high – at least officially. Sinovac’s vaccine is officially priced at USD$30 per dose and Sinopharm’s vaccine at USD$70 per dose.

That makes Sinopharm’s vaccine more than twice as expensive as those from Pfizer and Moderna, eight times more than Sputnik – and twenty times more than AstraZeneca.

Ah. I stand corrected. I wonder why they priced it so high.

I am hoping this new mRNA vaccine will be what the Chinese government needs to open up the country but I really can't be optimistic anymore after all of the shifted goalposts and broken promises.
