Another great reason to ride your bike

Cycling fans top the charts for the healthiest sports fan base in the UK, a study has found.

The survey, conducted by leisure centre operator Better, measured the physical health of 2,000 sports fans, comparing their exercise levels, viewing habits and nutrition to give them a score out of 49. The findings revealed that, of the seven most popular sports in the country, cycling enthusiasts boasted the highest results, ranking in first place alongside tennis fans with an average score of 38.

A key factor for cycling fans' strong performance in the rankings was their willingness to practise sport themselves, with 75% of those surveyed saying they ride their bikes regularly.

Also contributing to the groupís high health score was their reduced drinking tendencies. According to the survey results, cycling fans are among the least likely to watch sport from the pub, with 37% opting to visit their local drinking hole for live events, compared to 45% of rugby fans.

Personally, I think the best way to travel around is in a car, like my used 2008 Grandeur. Does nice with the ladies and also not having bugs flying into your face, but to each their own.

In summer this is true.  But it starts getting nice in fall.  Sept can be a transition month depending on the year.  Some humidity hangs around though less than summer and still hot in afternoon though slightly less so than summer.  End of September and through October really nice (low to mid 20's afternoons and dry - not humid) in a typical year.  But last few years have had strange weather different from tradition some years.

Anyways, Oct use to be really nice for biking.  Sept can be okay sometimes too.  November depending on how cool it is or how the pollution or dust can be some years.

went on a nice little bike ride last night.  it was beautiful a cool and clear and there were stars out over the ocean on a very dark secluded road. it was beautiful. Cant wait for a weekend of camping on the beach. Bringing the new bike up there. It not giant, but its that kind with the giant tires.

I see those around...the ones with big fat tires. How's the ride?

And...lucky you! Living within shouting distance of the seaside is the one thing that would make life near perfect for me. Coastal envy!

it is very very difficult to trudge along.  its a mountain bike with full shocks and disk brakes so its meant for going down hill and not up any. its very heavy and impractical. it looks cool as ferris bhuler though

It's like seeing Koreans with those 12 foot fishing poles, fully dressed in the latest full-battle-rattle, fishing-survival gear (with gloves), fishing on the bank of a pond.

I laugh every time I see it.

You know what's really healthy?

Jumping rope. Only 10 minutes jumping rope equals 30 minutes of jogging, supposedly.

It's also a highly recommended warmup before cycling.

If you do it right, there aren't any issues. :)

It doesn't even need to be high-impact. Youtube jumping rope vids for low impact.

Jump rope is one of the soy exercises my students do. And I can kick their butts. I'm no beta cuck.

No thank you.

How IS the right way to jump rope?  Honestly, I did it for a week...and could barely move the next two weeks after that (back).  Is it stance, foot position?  Do tell.

I can beat all of my students at pretty much everything, lol. They don't really make for good measurements of personal success.

Jumping rope can also help with chicken calves.

Posture (shoulders, neck, arm positions, etc...)

Method (don't just try to jump up and down, use the balls of your feet, not the flat of them)

Right on...appreciated.  I also have heard that jumping rope burns a good amount of calories, is great for the heart and ..."vitality".

the last time I tried, I just decided to go out and do it for week.  I did 20 minutes a day for 5 days, trying to Rocky-up.  I paid for it and it.

Yeah, try to work it into your workout routines gradually. Start off with only 5 minutes and work your way up over time. Don't try to dedicate an entire workout to it at first, use it as a warmup so that you can perfect your posture and techniques. Eventually it'll become more natural.

I'd also do core workouts that strengthen both stomach and back muscles but which still function to keep your back straight. Stuff like planks, supermans, pushups, etc. And do yoga stretches for back right after workout.

Winner, winner-chicken dinner.

I'm on board with the core workouts.  I do those, but in seasons.  I just did not pair them up the shot lived jump rope routine.

Core still seems to be undervalued. I've known a few meet-heads that could not hold a plank for three minutes...much less run a single mile in under 10 minutes. Goes to show that bulk does not equate to fitness.

Right on..thanks for the tips.
