One of the greatest songs of all time in one of the greatest movies of all time. It was used in the movie because they thought the message would be the opposite of the lyrics, that people would see the bloody insanity and stop it. It wasn't a nihilistic nod to the end but an objection to it, a picture of what to avoid, an anti-Vietnam tune that was banned from Texas and Oklahoma radio.
