New to Waygook, man didn't know there was drama on the forums like this haha. Also on average, how old are most of the posters on here? I'm a new teacher myself, so early 20's but it seems like a lot of folks are quite older as well! Nice to have a good cross-section of different people on here.

Hey Man, haven't taught in Korea for a while now. It's a great to build your chops though. Good luck  with it!

...not as old as Van Islander. He's in his late 70s .
Rye is smartin' from my reference to him as older than me (I'm 53, he remembers the 1960s).

This board has vocal 20somethings, 40somethings, a few of us more experienced folks and for some strange reason few 30somethings. But, of course, intro'ing yourself on a marijuana thread pretty much puts you on the fringe.

Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

Nice to see a new poster. Welcome to ya and good luck!
Agree, there is a good cross-section,
No, there isn't. In terms of the discussions (other threads maybe), outside of 745Sticky, I think almost everyone is 35+, with a disproportionate cluster of 50+. It also skews heavily white and male relative to the actual NET population.

I do think the teaching stuff and some other threads are more representative.

You'll have to excuse our man Marti. His ageism and lack of cultural awareness tends to skew his perspective on a host of things. It's almost as silly as Li's usage of Commonwealthers!

Hello imalcaza.  If you don't mind me asking, what brought you to Korea?
What part of the world are you from?

Also, this forum is basically The Dude, from The Big Lebowski vs. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Surely the unmarried old men still here like yourself are stranger than people in their 30's with ties here.

The discussion boards are mostly DeMartino and his ever-growing hate club following him from thread to thread. Some rare comedy gold from the resident oddballs too.

Waygook is a fount of information which can greatly assist newly arrived teachers on their adventures here in the land of the morning calm!

It is also a veritable treasure trove of lesson plans, camp materials, and assorted other educational resources.  ;D

Last but certainly not least, one can lose oneself for *days* following the scintillating conversations of the forum's more experienced ESL teachers, giving one a glimpse of the path one may find oneself walking if one is fortunate enough to still call South Korea home after a decade or so!   :azn:

You're suggesting we actually are representative of the NET population?

Marti he said "...on here" meaning on 'Waygook.org', not this thread specifically. Or at least that is how I read it. So, yes, there is a good xsection of people around this place, just as you next mentioned.
Fair enough. It was ambiguous but that ambiguity should have meant more ambiguity from me .

This forum seems to skew middle age+ and middling-to-below-average intellect. Posters with a dull/stagnant vibe.

A good place to swing by once in a while, if only to remember why you don't swing by more often.

I'd feel offended, but many of those words contained more than one syllable, so I didn't understand them.

Hmmm.  I would guess that's sampling bias.  Specifically, the observer effect.

Well, back on topic:

There were gaggles of giggling Thai grannies trying lurid-green cannabis drinks, and lining up to collect one of the million free marijuana plants the government is handing out.

"One thing is clear. You cannot go to jail in Thailand just for using cannabis any more," says Tom Kruesopon, a pioneering entrepreneur who helped persuade the government to change its approach. "You can go to jail for doing other things, like smoking in public, as a public nuisance, or creating and selling a product from cannabis that you did not get approval for from the Food and Drug Administration. But Thailand is the first country in the world where you cannot go to jail for growing or using the plant."

Totally kewl.

... middling-to-below-average intellect. Posters with a dull/stagnant vibe.
Yet you continually provide insults of posters intelligence, thinking it's fresh not stagnant, sharp not dull?

The VAST MAJORITY of smart people do not call others stupid, even if they think it. (Remember high school: Who says "You're stoopid!")

I teach a kid born in November 2015 who already can multiply 7 by 11, divide 120 by 6 and add 1090 to 26 in his head, and put it on the board, in seconds. He can spell "giraffe" and refrigerator". Dang. Some Korean youth are killing it.

I have heard "You are dumb" comments plenty of times in middle school, high school and uni, directed at people who seemed smarter (certainly better-performing) students who simply made a silly mistake.

No one at or near the top of the class called others dumb except for Justin, but he'd always been a jerk and two soccer players took out a couple of his teeth in senior high, and he stfu.

Today to post "You are stupid" and THINK IT HURTS says more about the speaker than the listener.

In "chimp's" case, he just may be a recalcitrant, castigator or troll.

Or he may be better than us Dean's honor list full-M.A. scholarship students, with "A+"s and published praises from profs, who went overseas for a little adventure, and got hooked.

"Chimp", you have a history of insults; refresh us on some awesome moments. "Aristrocrat" at least backs his claims up!

And Justin told me he lost his tooth taking boxing lessons in Alaska.

Thank you for this post, I often wondered what motivates him to be so objectionable. This world is so full of hate already, we don't need another person to perpetuate it.

Perhaps he has SMS or poor self-esteem, who knows?  I just wish he would stop and try to be nice, but I am not betting the farm on that.

There are two types of people in this world that I can't get my head around. His type and people who are always look around for ways to get offended.
There is no known medical cure for stupidity!

Chimp is pretty clearly not a serious account, so I wouldn't take anything that they say to heart.

They're probably a very loving and responsible mother of 2 and a stellar teacher when they're not offending people here on waygook.
