What's up with Koreans standing behind doors?
« on: May 12, 2022, 12:24:21 am »

Seriously, isn't it obvious that someone could push the door open at any moment and hit you?

Doors open. Especially in busy thresholds like near the lift. If you stand behind the door and someone pushes it open onto you, it's your fault for putting yourself in harms way. Not the fault of the person opening the door.

Total lack of forethought.

Yes, this only happens to stupid Koreans. Westerners are so much more
savvy in their day-to-day interactions with each other.

Is this the best trolling you can do today? I admit this forum is fantastically
boring these days, but really.

What's up with Koreans blocking entire sections at the supermarket with their bodies and carts?  Why can't they just stand back and look at what they might want?  It's incredibly inconsiderate to all the other shoppers.

Let's make this "Throwback Thursdays" a regular thing.

The best place to have a long think about what you're gonna do next is at the top/bottom of an escalator.

I taught back home at a school built on the "Florida plan" which means doors generally open directly to the outside--no hallways.

One Friday after school, I opened a door just as a few sixth graders were racing by and one of them smacked  right into it.  I asked him if he was okay, and told him to be more careful.

He showed up on Monday with his arm in a cast

I know this is generally a BS thread, but this ^ issue really does bother me. I don't notice it in Seoul so much, but I used to see it all the time in Daejeon. Usually just one person, blocking 75% of the space at the top of the escalator while they stood there blinking and slowly swiveling their head. Sometimes, though, there would be clusters of three or four ajummas, discussing some cousin's nephew's acceptance to Yonsei while everyone had to jump out of their way in the interests of avoiding multiple fatalities.

Korea developed very rapidly after the war, blah blah blah... I know, I know. But seriously, how can you reach adulthood and not realize that there are people behind you on the escalator who also need to disembark? How does that escape your understanding of how things work?

..and be sure to stop suddenly without warning, so that everyone behind you bumps into each other.

In one of the wayg FB groups yesterday, some young, conventionally attractive Vietnamese woman asked if anyone wanted to hang out and she put her ACTUAL address in the post. Building number and everything. Keep in mind this group has over 40 000 members in it. It's really big.

So, here's me commenting "Why did you put your actual address in the post??" So we already have naïve person number one; the Viet woman.

In comes naïve person number two who responds to me. She doesn't think it's a big deal. So I ask her "Would you put your face on a poster with your phone number and address and put it on a lamppost?" (This is essentially the same thing, for all intents and purposes. It really is.)

Naive 2 QUOTE: ohhh sorry maybe that's the life culture of you and it's bad.

Like, it's not about how or who I AM, it's about how insane EVERYONE ELSE could be. It's like saying you don't wear a seatbelt because YOU are a good driver.

So I prod her more with the fact that there are crazy people out there and she replies........ ready?

QUOTE 2: first of all I have no one to be afraid of I didn't commit any crimes for me to be scared if it's harmful to anyone will be welcome to my house I'll also serve that person lol it's nothing to hide about I'm living in a reality life not in a movie

Welp, enjoy getting dismembered by a serial killer lady. I totally understand that not everyone can know everything, but we learn this stuff when we're kids, right? Men with the white van, stranger danger etc. I mean, there are cultural differences sure, I think Naïve 2 was African, but surely they don't just put their actual address on lampposts or public forums, do they?

It's like looking both ways before you cross the street. Some things are BLINDINGLY, OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS. Hell, dating apps can be sketchy and you're usually meeting in a café or something. Who the hell gives their address out to 40 000 strangers as an attractive, young woman??????

How many of those have been in history? (Outside of Hitchcock serials).

CO2 reads like he's the last person to choose to walk into a village in rural Iran, Angola or Bangalesh. Villages the world over are 99% safe I'd wager; after midnight with bling bling in a nearby city is a different matter.

It all comes down to one's view of human nature in general and/or the mindset of people there these days.
Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

There's a difference between running into someone and chatting and going out for a meal and giving your HOME ADDRESS to 40 000 strangers on the internet.

You can see that, yes?  I ran a dinner group in my hometown for years before Corona and people would come out and eat at restaurants. We were in public, we were in groups and it was amazing. I didn't just go into some random web forum and say "Hi, I want friends. I am young and attractive and here's the address to my house."

You CAN'T be this thick, Van.

Also, being dismembered is an analogy. But getting creepos following you around? That's more than a small risk.

Yes.

But "enjoy getting dismembered by a serial killer lady" is a stunning statement I may be repeating in 2040.

I. Just. Don't. Understand. It.

(Unless you were insincere; was it a joke? ... I'd have assumed so before FOX news.)

Parody on this topic isn't your brand, so what gives?

CO2, isn't this hyperpole?

"enjoy getting dismembered by a serial killer lady"

Enjoy?

I simply said it was surprising, confusing and GAVE YOU AN OUT to say it was a joke.

But you doubled down.

To the point of a litmus test: who is ACTIVELY gonna try to harm or kill you, someone you know or a total stranger. (If you watch SVU or equivalent you think the former over the later). We know from murder stats galore that indeed most people are killed by people they know than by strangers... though most deaths are by: 1. heart attack (a lifestyle disease), 2.cancer and 3. stroke (a mostly lifestyle disease). Erase an 80% chance of your death by researching (science please) the three leading causes.

Being killed by a psycho stranger - especially a "lady" as CO2 describes - is statistically small.

It's a fear. But Disney's poisoned apple has done more harm than good perhaps.

I think that CO2 was trying to say that his own comment was hyperbolic.
I'm guilty of it too: hyperbole is the funnest thing in the world!

A freelancing lady for hire for a GFE?  Backpage was busy here before it got shut down.  That's the only reason I can come up with.

Again, this supports the impression that instead of a parody of your words, you made an expression of your belief.

You fear strangers in villages more than you trust them? If so, k. Own it. Many do. It is the right wing narrative in U.S. media (not that you are part of their lot nor that their perspective isn't at times apt).

There's NO GOOD REASON to give YOUR HOME ADDRESS out on a PUBLIC WEB FORUM.

Holy shit. Can I be any clearer? There's ZERO REASON.

I didn't say don't meet people, or that strangers are dangerous. DON'T GIVE YOUR ADDRESS OUT TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF RANDOM PEOPLE.

FFS, you were a journalist but your reading comprehension is ZERO.  You can believe that people are generally good and go out for casual dinners and still think that giving YOUR HOME ADDRESS out to STRANGERS in the TENS OF THOUSANDS is a bad idea.
