Also, I think this discussion has been rehashed a couple of times, but the quality of one's diet in the USA has a stronger correlation to one's socio-economic status than to one's ethnicity.

I think it's pretty common knowledge in parts of the world where lack of sunlight exposure is an actual issue.
I've known about Vitamin D deficiency and Seasonal Affective Disorder since middle-school.
I think your average bogun could be forgiven for not knowing a lot about it because it's pretty unlikely to ever affect 'em in any way.

I did a quick search on wiki, and it said that there are 60.5 million Hispanics living in the US (pop 329.5 mill) which is 18.4%.

The Republican Party has always been a "Normal American" party and the Democratic Party has always been a Coalition of Everyone Left Out party.

In its early stages, the Republican Party represented the Puritan Anglo (and to a small degree Dutch) traditions of the early Americans. Meanwhile the Democrats grew to represent Southerners, Irish, Germans, Catholics, labor and various "others". The Republicans incorporated blacks because it had been Northern Anglo Protestants who had pushed the most for abolition. The Democrats would later embrace the other immigrant waves and also to some degree, the rural vote. This would largely continue until the Great Depression in which the Republican Party became a party incorporating more "classic" Americans- Assimilated white immigrants, Anglos in professional classes, and a belief still in small government and the Protestant work ethic. The Democrats, thanks to pro-labor, good representation amongst poor farmers, and the social programs of FDR began to shift their coalition, the major result being the capture of increasingly large percentages of the black vote.

And you still see it today- Republicans represent the "Normal American" (or as many would say, and is true IMO- the fantasy of what the "Normal American" is) and the Democrats are a coalition party. The Republicans, as before, represent the traditional pillars of America, it is just what those pillars are is different now. Where as before it was Anglo Puritan-Protestant, now it is "white religious" (in fact, the traditional home of the Republican Party, New England, has largely rejected it). Catholics, Irish and other European immigrant descendants are increasingly identifying with the GOP, as are former groups that were part of the Democratic party- certain farming communities and laborers. The Democratic Party is still a coalition party. This time of blacks, Latinos, Asians, recent immigrants, women, and atheistic professionals/singles.

To say that a party has always been racist or the party of the KKK, or that "the parties flipped" is a misreading of what happened.
