What would It take for you to Leave Korea?
« on: September 24, 2021, 11:22:04 am »
We all live in the Republic of Korea, and most are teaching English as a pastime for life here.

But, did you ever think to leave Korea? For me, it would of meant geting a similar offer of a job at a University in another country (i.e., top 10 ranking university of that country.
I like my job, I like my students, I have friends who are from other countries, like you may imagine as somewhone spent many year sworking in the education sector..

I have friends in America, India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Japan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, all teaching in a University. Where would you go? What woudld it take?

How Low is too low? I'm fortunate at an university educator that my wage packet is "heavier" than the average hagwon employee.

No. Genuine question. Learning from those more successful than oneself / transcending crab mentality is the best way to live.

Grandfathered In on the ground floor.

Been here a long time. Back in the way, the universities dfidn't care about fancy "Diploma" so much as your charm, teaching ability and a firm handshake. Add tenure to the mix, and here I am to this day. would take a"PRETTY SWEET" offer to tempt me away...

Hence why we are still here.  Total packages equals an average of 3.6 mil a month.  When it goes below 3 with inflation factored in with today's money in the next number of years, it will be time to go.  If you make the same or more, then Korea is a good deal for you.  Though slightly less with lots more vacation may make it worth it too.  So long as it's not too much lower.

Tenure will do it.

I had a friend who was a lawyer in America.  His Korean wife dragged him to her small rural town almost 20 years ago.  He almost got divorced within a year.  He couldn't take Korea.  (Imagine rural Korea 20 years ago or Seoul 30 or 40 years ago, the behaviors, the racism, the peasant manners, etc).  Anyways, he found a professors job in the law department at Sogong Uni in Seoul.  Paid well but they wouldn't give him tenure.  So, he eventually found a smaller city university that would.  He went up the levels plus made good money.  He was making 5 or 6 million won a month back when 2 million was considered a good salary.  Then he went up to 7 mil a month.  He divorced his wife and she was crazy so he married another Korean woman and left in the middle of last decade.  But he had the sweet gig.  During his vacations, he was always gone back to America.  He de stressed from Korea and had a lot of free time as he condensed his classes into two days.  He worked in the law department and taught common law to the Korean lawyers to be in English (while their other courses were in Korean).

Basically, you're a conman with a modicum of teaching ability? I wouldn't leave either. Stay where you are. Congrats on playing the game and winning. Not gonna hate on that.

Why do they think we all do drugs?
*Waygook.org users constantly make references to doing drugs and how people should do drugs*
Why do they think we all have criminal records?
*Waygook.org stories of getting drunk and run ins with the law either here or back home?
Why do they think we're unqualified?
*Waygook.org story of "Dude, I totally got grandfathered in with just a bachelor's and was given tenure. Also, back during the wild-west days one of my buddies taught with just a GED. No one cared. Made up a story about having a degree."

Why do ajosshis think these things? It must be racism!

this logic is particularly ironic coming from you. i like how you can spend pages defending some dumb shit trump says because he "didnt really mean it" or "context matters" or whatever but you suddenly dont want to apply that same standard to particular waygook dot org users who are, no offense, rather prone to exaggeration.

You always do this and it really makes the whole site a worse place. You think the worst of everyone and you can never admit that you are just human, you think you're some kind of GOD.

The worst.

Dude, my post was clearly meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek not a sober analysis of rates of things and the ultimate veracity of that.

Like we legit on this thread has someone wonder why ajosshis thought we were unqualified and then had someone basically admit to being unqualified. And it's like "You're seriously wondering????"

in my defense, given your posting history, nothing about that was "clearly tongue-in-cheek", lol. nonetheless i stand corrected.
