My father thought a friend's son had a nice job working as a metalworker with union pay. He made too much to quit, drove a sports car and killed himself with a bullet to the head.

Walmart pays about $20.00 cad an hour at most places in Canada  which is about $3200 a month at 160 hours straight time more if you work holidays and overtime.

I’d rather just work at Walmart!

McDonald’s advertising for $25 an hour and can’t get no one.

Canada is f’d!

The average Mcdonald's salary in Canada is $25,350 per year or $13 per hour.
Entry level positions start at $23,000 per year.
https://ca.talent.com/salary?job=mcdonalds#:~:text=The%20average%20mcdonalds%20salary%20in,up%20to%20%2429%2C738%20per%20year.

The $25/hour job they're advertising probably requires high enough credentials that the people who actually qualify can get better remuneration elsewhere... hence the relatively reasonable hourly wage being offered.

Also... "can't get no one." ?

Seriously?  Where is this?  An isolated northern community or all over?  I doubt in the maritimes.  But depending on rent prices where it is, could be worth it if true.  Geeze, I had no idea.  I may have to go home to work then.

The wbsite says $25, 350 a year.  Korean salary at 2.1 million won a month converted into CAD is $27,397.66.  Living at home with the folks if you can earn more than minimum is more money.  But it does demonstrate in real numbers how pitiful teachers salaries are nowadays.

I just did a random search on 20 dollar an hour jobs in Calgary.  This is what came up though I am not sure if they are all paying this.  https://ca.indeed.com/$20-jobs-in-South-Calgary,-AB

I saw this one for 16 an hour.  So some may be paying more.  Grocery clerk.

https://ca.indeed.com/jobs?q=%2420&l=South%20Calgary%2C%20AB&start=20&vjk=7fe7cca8d2355b06

If fulltime 37.5 hours a week minimum multiplied by 52 weeks in a year that is $31200 a year.  Better than Korea nowadays if you can live with the folks or home cheaply.

28,705,815.62 KRW a year. Just short of 2.4 million won a month.

I'd say if you can get a 20 dollar an hour job or more in Canada and can live at home with the folks or board cheap, it may be worth it to say goodbye to Korea soon.  Many parts of the US have a cheaper cost of living (away from the coasts).  So if you are American and find 18 an hour or more and can live at home to save cash, take that for a bit and save some money or pay off loans or whatever.

I actually hadn't considered the home angle.  Things have changed though the cost of living may be more shocking than I realized.  I am aware living costs have gone up a lot since I left.

The average HS teacher in SA earns CAD $20,000 a year, $5,000 short of a Mcdonalds worker in Canada.
If the South African HS teacher landed a job in Canada, they'd be earning $46,524 dollars a year.
If the Canadian Mcdonalds worker went to South Africa and worked at a Mcdonalds there, they'd be earning $3,154 a year, not $25,350.

https://www.payscale.com/research/ZA/Job=High_School_Teacher/Salary

My grandfather taught me this basic concept when I was about 10yrs old and I got it; the cost of living and economies vary dramatically by country.

If you're Canadian and wish to be paid more money as a teacher, why not just be a teacher in Canada???? You possess the passport of one of the wealthiest 1st world nations on Earth, why bushwhack around in the developing world to earn developing world salaries?
Right, you can't teach in Canada. You wouldn't get hired because you are not qualified.
Higher pay, in education, comes with more responsibilities and skills, which you prove by producing credentials. Few employers are gullible or foolish enough to be impressed that you can make a bomb game your bitch.

Ergo, go back to school.

If you want more money and don't want to improve your qualifications might I suggest starting a career with Onlyfans?

Won't disagree with you. 2.1 is pretty crap.

But compare apples to apples: 2.1 is entry level wages for a NET here in Korea, so one should be comparing it with the 23k number from McD's.

Also, tax differences, welfare quality differences, cost of living differences etc make directly comparing wages a bit more difficult than a lot of people would like to pretend.
I made a lot more money back home, but am saving a lot more over here while living the same lifestyle, more or less.

Better to compare saving potential rather than earning potential.

Well, as I said, if you live at home with the folks or rent a room cheaply and if you live in a place that pays at least 25,000 a year, you can prob save a lot.  Live at home with free room and board or something cheap even if you do pay a bit to mom and pop.  I think saving 500 US in Korea a month can be beaten at home based on this.  Living on your own is something different of course unless you get a job well into the 30's per year.  As for the jobs here, they paid 3 million a month in today's money.  Now, they don't.

Average college graduate starting salary: $55,260.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/01/college-graduate-starting-salaries-are-at-an-all-time-high.html

Average starting salary for a computer programming major: $86,098.

What's the average starting salary for a gender studies major? The article doesn't say. But the way the world's going with woke-ism momentum, that might be a growth industry.

Yes I remember the way people used to scoff at those doing grievance studies at universities, claiming they'd get a huge shock when they entered the real world. Turns out the real world nowadays has jobs a plenty for them, with big companies rushing to hire them.

Minimum wage in the majority of provinces is above $13.00 an hour.

Alberta and BC are around $15 for example, no Canadians will work for minimum wage!

So not sure where 13.00 is the average

If you add in the cost of housing and food, the way hankook inflates his salary, that 3.9 million would be close to, if not more than, 5 million. And you don't have to go to China.

Minimum wage is a starting wage. It’s what 15 to 19 year olds get at the beginning of their first unskilled part time job. Gradually over time, one earns more and more.
