I agree with Biden and the Afghan pullout.
« on: August 17, 2021, 08:16:02 am »
I totally agree with Biden and the Afghan pullout. The UK and
American mission there was a complete failure and it is time
to cut losses and run.

In a way it is a replay of Vietnam. These big powers never seem
to learn.  The first thing a lot of the Afghan people wanted was
all jarheads out of their country. I totally agree with this.

The USA was defeated in Vietnam and it was just defeated in
Afghanistan. There are more ways to fight a war than dropping
bombs all over the place.  Obviously here, the waiting game was
the winning strategy.

The Taliban have stated that they have evolved in the last twenty
years. Well, it can't be any worse than the corruption ridden,
puppet government that used to rule there.

I agree that the it was time for the American military presence to leave Afghanistan, but I strongly disagree with the above quote.

Human rights issues are going to sky-rocket.
If nothing else, the absolute dismantling of women's rights makes Taliban rule a catastrophe.

This is something that we will no longer see starting in the very near future.

Agree with the withdrawal. Otherwise they would be there for the next 100 years. As long as the American public can't accept American soldiers coming back in body bags, and the lifeless bodies of foreign children being dug out of the rubble of foreign cities, they'll never 'win' another conflict again.

Invading a foreign country is usually a long term losing situation, especially one half-way around the world. The people living there aren't going anywhere.

Is Iraq next?

What do you have against the Taliban? I view them as the Afghan version
of the Republican Party. Pro guns, not too keen on democracy, storming
their own capital city. Haha

Before you know it Russia and china will be knocking on the door. Say hello to the "new" Soviet Union.

If you can't finish a job, don't start it in the first place, but never leave without finishing a job that you have started. But what did you expect from a president who stole the election?

I feel like some commonwealth people - like the OP - are obsessed with bashing the United States.

But other commonwealth folk - like the response under the OP - are more reasoned.

Why are some of the commonwealth people going on and on about how the United States is bad, starting multiple threads on the topic? Is it what they are taught in school, like K-kids’ Dokdo education?

It’s nuanced. Was the US right to defend South Korea against communism? Yes, and it’s the reason we are working here today. North Korea is terrible. Our K friends in the South are free from that. And the world has the beautiful music of BTS and BlackPink.

Vietnam was a second attempt to stop a communist takeover. It didn’t work, partly because Ho Chi Minh was a military genius, one of the best to ever do it. Had South Vietnam been preserved as a capitalist country it’d be better off today.

Iraq was a hostage situation. The dictator was a bad guy. Bringing democracy to the country did some good. It wasn’t all bad.

The Taliban harbored Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden. Evil people. We want Islamic terrorism to go down and we want girls to be able to go school to get an education. Women should be allowed to choose the clothes they want rather than be forced to wear a burka.

Hang on dude! Are you sure his post wasn't bashing the leaders of Commonwealth countries as well for pulling out?
What's up with your extreme sensitivity to any perceived slight on the United States anyways? Is it because of the way your were taught at school like K-kids’ Dokdo education?

At least, the Taliban take a strong stand against bacha bazi. The custom was revived when they lost power.

Yes. The OP was pro pullout. Reread it. You’re another Commonwealther who bashes the United States all the time. So does the OP. Not “perceived” slights. And in the US, we’re not even taught about Commonwealth countries at all pretty much and spend close to zero time thinking about them. Can’t say the reverse is true though.

Wait a minute the group we help found and funded for decades is not an ally..... hmmm       interesting

But yeah this was never going to end well. This was just a political football being kicked about because no one wanted to be the one to see the full repercussions. What the media should be focusing on is the actual invasion, regardless of politics and who benefited most.

It was necessary and inevitable.

20 years of occupation and the entire gdp of a middle income country spent...yet all the Afghans have to show for it is a better equipped Taliban.

I'd imagine if that money was invested back home, a lot of teachers in Korea would have no reason to have even gone to work in Korea in the first place.

Well it might surprise you but there was involvement from commonwealth countries in Vietnam as there was in Afghanistan. Criticism of the reasons for both of these wars is not necessarily only criticising the United States. Would it surprise you that such criticism also involves the leaders of commonwealth countries that went along with it? It's becoming clear that your education system has let you down on a lot of things Toots.

Yes, Commonwealth countries played a minor role in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Afghan War, and Iraq War, but the United States did most of the heavy lifting. Their presence is what most mattered.

What good did the American troop presence in Afghanistan do? There was a twenty year period in which women there could attend school. That’s good. Glad they could experience that. And Al-Qaeda was weakened. No more 9/11 type events. We like that.

1) this is definitely not true (at least it wasn't for me)
2) if it were true, it wouldn't be something to brag about
3) if this was true for you, i'd really be interested in hearing about your education (specifically when and where)

maybe this is true re: new zealand and australia (i'm sorry, really, i love you guys...) but the other big ones? really? you learned pretty much nothing about them?

Yes, the US were right to get out of Afghanistan as it is clear from the complete failure of the Afghan army to fight back against the Taliban.

It is awful at how fast the Taliban advanced to Kabul but I don't blame Biden for the current situation.

It is interesting that the Trumpicans/Republicans seem to forget when Trump pulled most of the troops out and wanted them all gone. Hell, he even agreed to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners which included top Taliban commanders for that "peace deal" that never happened.
