For those hoping ESL salaries will increase
« on: July 17, 2021, 01:07:53 am »
Demographics are against you.

Quote
South Korea has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, and it's resulted in hundreds of schools being abandoned.

These schools have been slowly emptying out over the past four decades.

Some provinces breathing new life into empty schools, repurposing them as galleries and community centers.

ESL boom post unification? There would be millions of NK kids and young adults who would need to catch up with their SK counterparts.

Maybe ESL teachers could start campaigning for reunification of the two Koreas .

Reunification won’t happen without a war. Time to give up on a peaceful reunification there will be no east-west German style reunification here as China and Russia both share a border with the north.

The wage increase will have to come from new harsher requirements. Only certified teachers at public schools and hagwons. No F visa work around and no exceptions!

Want to teach? Get a degree from a university, want a korean boyfriend/girlfriend join a Facebook group and quit taking the bottom of the barrel jobs!

Well quite a few young teachers I have seen on the Facebook groups (cause they don't come here as much anymore nor Daves), seem to be disillusioned with the pay.  They realized the recruiters sold them a bill of false goods.  So, there are many other countries to jump to.  Korea either smartens up or it doesn't.

Let them jump. The whole point is that Korea needs fewer and fewer teachers as its population shrinks.

It hasn't shrunk that much yet.  Only the rural areas are flushing out.  The cities are either stable and growing.  Seoul and Gyeong gi in particular are still growing (with Seoul itself close to stable due to housing prices).

WTF? That’s awful! Are you guys aware educational funding from the government goes up every year, and by a significant amount? “The budget is being cut” means the budget for NETs is being cut. Other areas are getting increased funding.

Well, right now all that money seems to be getting spent on sanitizing wipes.

If you have a Jeonse?  That usually means you pay a certain deposit and then pay monthly rent.  Sometimes though I suspose it could mean a huge 100 million won deposit and no rent.  Not sure how many eslers do it like that though.  They better give the money for rent or folks will go elsewhere to teach.  Folks may do it for a year in their crappy housing and then bye bye.

That's not what it means. Try again.

Jeonse (Korean: 전세; Hanja: 傳貰), also known as Chonsei, Key Money Deposit[1] or Key Money,[2] is type of a lease or deposit common in the South Korean real estate market. Instead of paying monthly rent, a renter will make a lump-sum deposit on a rental space, at anywhere from 50% to 80% of the market value. The owners make profit from reinvesting the jeonse deposit, instead of receiving the monthly rent. It is also possible to combine a lower jeonse with a lower monthly rent.

I imagine this is what Hangook's referring to, so I don't see how he's actually completely wrong here

Yeah, this is what I do.  Prices are or were cheaper out her in the provinces though they are increasing a lot here too.  Compared to what it would be in Seoul.  10 mil down and a few hundred for rent each month.

A 10m deposit is not jeonse

A 10m deposit is not jeonse

That's right. Not even ''half jeonse'', unless the whole jeonse of the place is like 30 million or so.
Jeonse doesn't involve any monthly payment.
There is weolse which needs a deposit of 5, 10, 20 million deposit. It can be even 50 or 100 million depending on the jeonse value of the place.
And there is half-jeonse which includes a large chunk of deposit and a bit of a monthly rent on top of that. Like 200m and 300/month.

How can the education know who paid jeonse or own? They’ll check everyone’s housing contracts? NETs will need to submit that info?
