How Many Years have You Been In Korea?
« on: June 04, 2021, 02:28:51 pm »
Like, it says in the title, for how long  have you been rocking in the ROK?

For me, I'm just shy of my 25th anniversary. Came out after college, did a couple of years in a hogwon and then teaching in a university since. Time flies! A lot has changed since then... a lot hasn't (2.0 minimum salary )

I feel young compared to you guys.

I arrived on election day 2002 when Roh Moo-hyun became president-elect.

End of 2006.  The Korean golden age ended within 2 years of that.  Maybe a year earlier for Canadians since the exchange rate went to shit at the end of 2007 and didn't really recover until the end of 2014 (but that was only because of the oil crash - an artificial thing).  Exchange rate decent now, but local cost of living has soared now.  So, maybe first year or so was good here?  I prob should have jumped ship then but who knew?  From 2009 forward market got too flooded.

Yes, the Korean golden age is tied to NETs and the exchange rate.

The Korean Golden Age is now in terms of cultural output and having been viewed as a model nation for the first half of the pandemic and one of the winners overall, even with the slow vaccine rollout.

this is a forum for NETs, and especially seeing as it's hangook's post I think its pretty easy to figure out that yes, he is in fact talking about the Korean Golden Age for NETs specifically. what's the point of your post exactly? (other than clarifying something everyone who can read already knows that is)

Holy sh*t!  You couldn't just answer a simple question that had nothing to do with salaries, could you?  You had to bring out your tired and worn message again.  We all get it, almost everyone agrees and message received.  Are you under the impression people still haven't quite caught on to what you're trying to get across?

First swung in and out in 97-98 and now I'm into my 11th consecutive year.

Here is an extrapolation to 2021.  Might be accurate if the decline
is linear. Also, many E-2 visas converted to F type visas. The 2017
data is available. Can't see any after that.

Oh but you'd miss the easy one-liners, mocking rhymes and puns on whatever dumb stuff he was rambling about.

Anyways 2009. Check Dave's!

Summer 2016.

Back then I had very grand ideas about where my Korean language skills would be if I stayed for some extravagant length of time like 5 years.

How far did your Korean skills progress? If a lot less than expected that’s most of us.

Certainly prices had doubled or tripled for many things that decade.

Near the beginning of that decade...

a can of Coke 500 won
an ice cream 300 to 600 won (prices suddenly tripled + mid-decade)
kimchi stew 3500 won
bokbunja 3800 won
soju 600 won
watermelon 4000 won was 'a little expensive)
a bag of Jeju tangerines for 1000 won
a huge meter-long bag of onions for 6000 won
Internet cafe 1 hour 500 won
a big pot of gamja tang for 12000 won
instant coffee free so many places, and 100 won in machines (green tea too)
love motels were 15,000 to 30,000 won a night
a pizza was 5000 to 8800 won delivered
a big box of strawberries were 2500 to 3000 won
a big bottle of Samdasoo water was 500 won (six for 2500 won)
etc

A Golden Age in terms of prices, for sure.
