Hello and advice?
« on: June 01, 2021, 09:39:45 am »
Hi all,
Just accepted a bit of sub work for a few afternoons at a hagwon for elementary kids.
I'm kinda lost on what to expect from it , and exactly what to prepare for.
I see many posts saying kids dont behave / see it as play time etc - I'm completely fine with that - but I dont want to turn up with a bunch of games, then realise I'm expected to be teaching a serious grammar point. - or vice versa!

I've got no experience of teaching kids yet - but do have quite a bit of classroom teaching adults (not-ESL courses) - which I know will be VERY different.

Lots of advice and posts I see are about teaching in public schools, with co-teachers etc. I think I'll be kinda left on my own to get on with it!.

Long story short - should I prepare for a crazy youth club with crazy kids, or proper teaching lessons?

Any help appreciated!
Ta

No answers.
So heres my experince!

I've done a few lessons now. Its very much - "here's the kids - GO".
I've got the freedom here to do whatever I want, which is nice. Although I'm not getting any feedback other than that the kids are happy.
Certainly feels a little odd. But I'm going down the route of learn through play - with quiz shows and party games with a clear english element to them.

Kids are lively - think their chairs are made of lava, as they cant sit down for more than 3 seconds before jumping up!.

However they are all well behaved so far - in the way that none of them are swearing / causing trouble.

I feel a little bit more like a butlins red coat than a teacher if I'm honest - but for me, thats not a bad thing.

Hope that info helps someone!

Thanks everyone. A little late in coming, if I'm being honest, but thanks none the less.

I don't get in shape. I bring the gym to my house and I throw it around.
