Teenage girls twirling a ribbon and dancing to music always seemed like a joke.
Gymnastics has always been a core element of the Olympics and in some more conservative countries, is one of the few disciplines that will get decent funding for women's sport.

NFL will never catch on outside the US. It's just too complex, expensive and specialised. If we look at soccer/football, the most popular sport on Earth, we see that its popularity is based on simplicity and ease of access, all you need is a round ball and makeshift posts.

Like Rugby union, NFL is complex and requires a team to play.

I'm not sure about NFL, but Rugby's popularity has gradually been growing thanks to changes in the laws/rules to make the game more fast-paced, exciting and safe. Gone are the days of the ref stopping the game every 10sec for every minor infraction or being very stingy with the substitutions forcing players to play longer games and limiting the amount of power, speed and aggression we see on the field.

For the rest of the world to be interested, NFL has to scratch an itch that Rugby doesn't.
I basically agree. I just needed something non-Sino related to fire up the discussion. NFL has too many play stoppages (boring) and is way too expensive for most other countries.

At the same time I would like to see an all-out brawl for footballing supremacy with Gaellic, rugby union, rugby league, Aussie, and NFL.

One thing I've come to realize, is that Europeans/Commonwealthers are often just as ignorant about sport as Americans are and possibly more so. It's getting better in the youtube and streaming age, but still, you often get people online who are wildly misinformed about American sports and their setup and also the level of athleticism they have, particularly in basketball and football. Like I've seen people claim that Ronaldo can outjump NBA athletes and that rugby athletes are faster and hit harder (because no pads) and basically anyone with an honest eye and half a brain can see that isn't true.

There's a BIG difference between gymnastics and that silly thing called "rhythmic gymnastics" that became an Olympic sport when I was in middle school.

IMO just get rid of the Olympics period.

And for whoever was dissing curling, it's a little known fact that the sweeper in curling is one of the best conditioned athletes in any sport.

What exactly is it that "the crazies" wish to happen? What sports have already been ruined by them? And which sport is next on their agenda?

6th post. Derailment commenced.

Get rid of synchronized swimming. Add ballroom dancing.

Bring back jousting. Maybe add knight fights too.

And for the winter Olympics- dog sled racing. Yeah, some groups will whine and moan. So what?

Boxing is scored; it is more like soccer than figure skating imho. The judges count points. The nature of it is such that an accurate count is difficult, so they have a panel.

Or just make the Olympics pay for themselves rather than cities and governments.  No public welfare handouts.

The Olympics is boring to watch, and so much of the judging is biased.

Turn the whole thing into a gladiator pit. Let the lions judge their fates.

Tbqs, I would definitely watch an Iron-man-esque type of obstacle course marathon run.
