Given how often this has come up recently, I thought it would be interesting to see where Waygook members really stand on this issue. Even those that just lurk...

Whatever reason you have against working there, it could be outweighed by a certain level of income. The question is, how much would tip the scale for you?
Since most are teachers here, the poll mainly has options for that salary range and some.

-  either moving there from home country or a third country (ie. Korea)
- "most likely" or "would strongly consider it" is not good enough. Pick the option that would make you pack your bags within a few months tops.
-  just imagine for now that there is no more Covid19 so international travel and entering China is not an issue.
-  let's say it's a big city with a population of more than 5 million.
-  roughly standard working conditions. 25 hours or so/week and housing provided on top of the above salary

You are putting your health and potentially freedom at risk. And if you've got your health, you've got everything.

Not for all the tea in China.

You're right. Unfortunately, I can't edit the options.

yeah i messed up and didnt read the stipulations. to move there within a few months i think id be in the not even for 10k category, but i put myself in 4k+. also probably same as fka in that i'd want some serious benefits and a good city

Sorry folks, I also wanted to add some more options with higher pay levels, but at the same time I was hoping to have more detailed options in the lower figures that would compare to salaries in Korea. (just to have a jab at you know who)
As it turns out, I can actually edit the poll as well. So I removed the first option, as it was just taking up space. Sorry SPQR!
And added a new option at the end.
I didn't reset the count because the 4k+ option has only 4 votes so far, and already 2 of them expressed their views. So I guess it doesn't distort the whole picture much.

Of course you can pick the city.

The EPIK program in Korea is not the usual way of getting an ESL job.

5-6k with good benefits. I applied and was accepted to an international school in Shenzhen 4 years ago. I was in the process of leaving when Korea gave me my F2-99 visa.

After switching to the F visa money was easy to get. 3 years ago I got married. Now I’m stuck here. China is still somehow tempting though.

I used to visit Hong Kong and Shenzhen regularly on business
when I first came to Korea.  HK would be a great place to live (or
was). Shenzhen has the bonus of being close to HK and the ocean,
but it is still a massive conglomeration of factories and buildings
that dwarfs anything Korea has. Awesome restaurants, though.

I'm not beyond bribery, but it would have to be enough to substantially alter my lifestyle. 4 million won a month would not do that.

Considering 20 people replied to the poll, it's hardly binding or reflective of people's real opinions.

I can't see myself ever moving to China. Honestly, I don't know if I'd even be willing to visit, which is a shame because there are definitely some great sights.

actually, 27 people responding (as of this post) is pretty solid for a waygook poll

This is waygook.org, not CNN. What's your point?

You also have to consider why. Probably some of the people on the lower end are apolitical and more interested in travel. You could Insert (nominally interesting country X) and they'd probably be willing, simply for the travel experience. Not really a reflection on China or Korea's job offerings.

but imagine being lower than a dude (me) who was formerly called Xi by several members of this fine board

I am not an ESL teacher, so my numbers would be very different, but it would be higher than 4 times my price to work in Korea!
