After School 1st and 2nd grade; need ideas!
« on: April 14, 2021, 09:38:06 pm »
I'm starting after school classes next week with my Elementary. Two of my classes are pretty easy to come up with something that would be student centered. I'll be teaching four hours - two days total.

My elementary school has a class set where I am with 1st and 2nd grade students where essentially they aren't as exposed to English. They want me to pretty much give them a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy English and make it fun, but I need ideas on how I can make it so since English isn't part of their curriculum. They do not want it to be too much of a class but just exposing them to English. I have them twice a week for 45 minutes and I'll only have a Korean teacher there for part of the class to help manage them.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.  :)

Genki English has some fun enthusiastic ideas - using songs, actions and movement.  I've also watched a couple of his demo lessons with young learners to get some ideas on how I can behave as a teacher.  Of course, with Covid-19, some of the activities (ie getting them to run to the flashcard on the wall and touching it) will probably not be possible to be used.  But you could have the students turn around and point with both arms (or with their head, their leg, their elbow, nose, book) to it.  Or have the flashcards up high on the board or down low and students can stand up/sit down depending on the word you use.

Thank you! I'll definitely check it out. :)

Songs, music and dancing!

If you need some material for grade 1 and 2, here are some channels with songs that are level appropriate and fun:
-Super Simple Songs
-Pinkfong
-CoCoMelon

Getting them to learn the actions with the songs can be pretty fun!

Also, if you want to be *super* cool, find a secondhand guitar (I've seen 'em on FB groups for as cheap as 20k), spend 20 minutes to learn 1 or 2 chords, and kind of make noise along with the tv. Worked for me!

Also: colouring!
The internet has oodles of doodles that are great for colouring. Many of them have English letters and stuff that they can colour, which makes it genuine English learning material.

Twinkl covers a lot of creative activities and worksheets that will bring an element of fun for your classes. A mix of activity packs and even powerpoints are some good ideas because it will give more of a visual way of learning for your class which might suit them too.

Worksheet - https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-e-163-expanding-sentences-worksheets
Activity Sheet - https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-e-4117-lks2-uplevelling-sentences-activity-sheets
Powerpoint - https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-e-4054-lks2-uplevelling-sentences-activity-powerpoint

Hope this helps  ;D

Find some good topic ppts here to start a chat with simple words and pictures.  Find related videos or songs.  Then add some games or activities.  It can be a physical craft making something, it can be a non technology game like telephone or others (once covid is done), or can be your traditional ppt type game or activity.  Some classes can also have simple writing work sheets for phonics spelling simple words.  IE  ABC, Cat, Hat, Bat, etc.

Once you compile these lessons, keep them on two external hard drives, plus a cloud if you have it.  You can use and reuse again and again, even if you go to teach in other countries.  The second hard drive is to be backed up along with possible cloud frequently in case your first hard drive breaks or gets dropped.  I also keep some basic lessons on USBs at each school I work at as well as my first external hard drive I take to all schools with me.

I don't want to lose years or hard work.  Makes it easy for me to take on extra classes and to do lots of overtime if asked at the last minute.  Last minute change of plans (which Koreans and other Asians are known for), no problem, whip out a lesson at the last minute.  Everything from games topics, to writing activities even short stories copied from ESL websites always has a future use.

Best of luck.

Some ESL books may help you.
