Back to the grind kids!!!

First day of school soon.  How goes it?

I am told orientations and maybe still some kids staying home according to the news?

I've been on vacation for 3 and a half weeks, so I have no clue what is going on at my schools.

That's gonna depend on your social distancing #.

At my school (in Seoul, part of SMOE), as of tomorrow, grades 1 and 2 get 5 days in school, and grades 3 to 6 get two days.

The current plan is one in-school English class per week for 4th grade, dunno for fifth grade, but at least one in-school class, and sixth grade teachers are going to meet on Thursday to decide.  Sixth grade is also considering expanding the Zoom format.  We'll see if they want to put English into that--up to this point, the "online" has been all videos, interactive activities like educandy and whatever related (non-sign-in) interactives I can find (for me.  KT use e-haksubta, mainly, and other Korean-language-heavy sites).  Plus the occasional take-home worksheet that they're supposed to do with a video.  And of course the online textbook stuff.

I bet that didn't help much, but anyway.

Back to normal here in the sticks, but with a condensed schedule mainly to keep the lunchroom flowing.

Mostly normal, but we're still going to be hybrid. 1/3 of the school will be online while the rest will be f2f. A different grade will be doing online classes each week. English camps are expected to resume this summer, but with social distancing kept in mind -- I was one of the lucky ones, had all of my camps canceled last year.

Yeah, I just found out today that not all kids are back.  Some kids are still doing online.  I think my schools were hyping it over a month ago that all kids would be back and things would be back to normal.  I am sure it will be soon enough.  A google search on herd immunity will yield wonders.  So, the end is coming vaccine or not.  Nice welcome break to not have full class load just yet, I guess.  Most of my ppts are already done.  So, read and listen to YouTube.  Ha ha.   (But gr 3 and 4 textbooks will p[probably change next year.  Too bad I couldn't get a head start on those.)

You'll be in China then, though.  Won't be anything you have to worry about.

Well, I'm predicting that schools will be mostly back to normal at the start of the second semester. We'll probably still be expected to wear masks until next year, but that's my guess atm.

Yeah, I also heard they plan to start rolling vaccines out soon too. I read Q1 was elderly and at risk people, Q2 - think it was essential workers, Q3 - was educators and something else, Q4 everyone else.

Most likely way more than that got it but didnít even know they had it and now have antibodies against it. Some people donít feel sick at all from coronavirus; their body defeats it very quickly. Still, herd immunity in Korea is a long way off. Gonna be another year I guess.

Herd immunity coming according to John Hopkins.  Also, we know many people were deathly ill and very very sick with covid like symptoms with the nastiest cold many had in years before covid was officially announced.  Through the fall of 2019 for example.  Covid didn't begin in February 2020 just because the media decided to recognize it then.  So, we will by summer be coming up on two years of this at least.

Guys and gals, keep your immune system strong to protect yourself and others.

Ten years ago, I got H1N1 (the swine flu). Was sick for days. At the time I drank, smoked, didnít eat particularly healthfully, and never exercised.

But now I never smoke or drink, eat healthy food, and exercise daily. And you know what? I havenít been sick for years. (In my past life I got sick a lot.) Iím confident if I got the swine flu now I wouldnít even know I had gotten it because my body would kill it so quickly. Same with coronavirus. Iím not afraid at all. (Koreans are on average much healthier than the average person from our countries of origin, hence why there have been so few deaths or illnesses comparatively. A massive factor anyways. One that hasnít been brought up enough.)

If youíre exceptionally healthy and get a virus youíll feel nothing. If you are below average health and get a virus youíll get sick. Might even die if your body is exceptionally weak. How healthy we are is within our control.

In his editorial New Rule, Bill Maher argues that people should fight the coronavirus by strengthening their immune systems, rather than by sanitizing the universe.

If he is not being sarcastic, then he is mostly right on this.  Though I don't mind some sanitizing habits.  (If it forces even other countries with bad habits to clean up, then it can be a good thing.)

Remember, you're an ESL teacher, not a world leading virologist.

Keeping fit and healthy always improves your chances, but it's far from a guarantee with a virus that's still not fully understood.

Sounds pretty anecdotal to me.  You just feel your body would "kill" coronavirus so quickly you wouldn't know you'd gotten it?  Well, toss the masks and stop washing the hands, LI has it figured out.  And where do you get that Koreans are much healthier than the average western person from?  Just make it up?  Just because you were a smoking, drinking unhealthy eating individual doesn't mean we can all be put into that category.  I'll keep going to the gym and keep making an effort to eat well but I am not about to throw out the masks and social distancing.  I think when the dust is settled and studies done, the fact that Koreans were so quick to get on the mask train en masse will be held up as a contributing factor to the lower rates.
