GEPIK S+ salary category gone?
« on: January 04, 2021, 01:35:14 pm »
I seem to remember that in the past, the highest pay category was S, which allowed a school to pay up to a maximum of 2.7 million won per month. My school is now saying that the maximum amount is 2.5 and, looking at the most recent contract, it only has up to 1+. Did they lower the salary cap?

Wouldn't the answer to that be on the front page of your contract? EPIK contracts list the various different pay brackets on the front page. I assume the GEPIK contracts do as well seeing as they're exactly the same in most every other respect.

Anyway, I remember that at the end of the 2017 school year, they upped the 1+ pay from 2.4 to 2.5, and that it was the highest possible pay bracket. How far back are you thinking of?

OP you are right!  The highest that could be paid (I think this ended about 4 years ago) was 2.5 but your school could pay you as much as 2.7 depending on your principal's satisfaction with you.

Yeah, they did away with this a few years back.

Also, those pay-scales are minimums. The standard EPIK and GEPIK contracts still state that our schools can choose to pay us more if they want to (Article 13, clause 8 ).

Kind of.  2.5 was the cap technically, but there was a clause in the contract that stated that your school could pay you up to 2.7, but that was up to your principal's discretion.  Then they erased that clause a few years ago.

How often does that happen?

You mean you get extra classes which are considered overtime?

at least for SMOE, i know that "S" was a special position (with extra duties, afaik), and only held by one person.

I do get overtime pay for overtime work, yes, but that's a whole 'nother story.
Actually, that sweet overtime gig dried up with Covid.

Like being a regional coordinator, I guess?

I've been looking at my contract and I can't find that anywhere..... (article 13 is regarding housing on mine)...

"Benefits" would be Article 14 for GEPIK.
And I've just noticed that while it is otherwise exactly the same as the EPIK contract, it doesn't have a clause number 8 like the EPIK one does.  Huh. That sucks. I'm sorry.

In the EPIK contract, clause 8 states that:
"The Employer may provide a special allowance to an employee who has made a great contribution to the Employer and/or who is determined to work at a special institute by the Employer. "

Yeah...I used to get the full 2.7 at my other school and then when I moved to this school they said it was taken out of the contract.  I make less now than I did 10 years ago....ridiculous.  With that and every time you change schools your pay is on a lower pay scale....it's really disheartening.

Is that also something particular to GEPIK?
Out here in the boondocks, as long as your change is within the same POE, you don't regress on the payscale.

Might be time to consider ditching Gyeonggi-do! Not only will your contract be better, but you'll get to live further away from Seoul!

I really wanted to head home this year but with the COVID thing I think I'm better off here for another year.

Next year I need to be Canada bound...I'm just really concerned about finding another job (I'm not a teacher in Canada nor do I wish to be) and am finding it a challenge to figure out what to do next....it's truly daunting...

I want to go check that out on YTube just to see the comments.  She obviously wasn't told in her survey that first impressions count, so you may want to not look as disheveled as she did in an interview.  The "bathed recently" look is considered important in interviews these days, even if you're meeting online.

I've been in Asia for a while, and know plenty of folk who've gone back to their home countries. Most of those who had some kind of plan, or goal to achieve have done pretty well for themselves (many of them are now teachers, not surprisingly). The ones who didn't often just ended up back in Asia, which isn't a terrible thing so long as one is keeping the future in mind.

This whole "your time teaching ESL is time wasted" thing is rubbish.

actually it was the co-ordinator who explained the "S" grade. he didn't go into details but said STOP ASKING ABOUT THE S GRADE. IT'S A SPECIAL POSITION. ONLY ONE PERSON HAS IT. GRADE A IS HIGHEST. PLEASE STOP ASKING ME

or something like that.
