Eddie Van Halen has died
« on: October 07, 2020, 07:57:09 am »
This is a sad day in music. Eddie Van Halen has died of cancer. So sad. He did something so very few have ever done, he changed music. His unique and virtuoso guitar playing turned the rock world upside down.

Van Halen's stage show was second to none. They left it all out there. Mr. Van Halen was a professional musician and played in the band onboard the cruise ship to pay for his family's passage from The Netherlands when they moved to the USA. Arriving not speaking a word of English, Eddie and Alex took their musical talents to the absolute peak of the rock world.

I first heard about Van Halen reading an interview with Gene Simmons in Circus magazine. They had yet to put out their first album and I went to the record store and prepaid. It arrived and my friends and I sat in my basement and had our minds blown. We all jumped on our instruments and tried to replicate what we had just listened to. Silly kids.....

Eruption.....the song, the music, the movement...

Eddie will be missed. If you never saw them in their heyday, you missed an amazing show that would have knocked your socks off.

“Eddie struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse. He began smoking and drinking at the age of 12, and he stated that he eventually needed alcohol to function.”

That sucks.  Unlike what some die hard fans said, I liked Van Halen with all 3 lead singers, though the 3rd didn't last long of course.  Obviously Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth had very different personalities and styles.  But, the guitar style of Van Halen was often underestimated due to becoming too mainstream in the 80's and 90's.  They became a little too love ballady at times, though.  Guess they had to do that to sell records.  Still, I appreciated their music.  I like everything from 70's and 80's rock, to some 90's grunge, to 2000's rock from Foo Fighters, to Linkin Park, to Audioslave, to Three Days Grace.  (Some still putting out music on YouTube today though it seems like around 10 years ago rock vanished off the top 40.)

Anyways, to the legend that was Van Halen, Cheers!!!

Not a huge fan, but you couldn't avoid them in the first half of the eighties in North America.  Never owned an album but I think this was their best tune.  I never get tired of hearing it.

Sad.

Hot for Teacher was one of my favorite songs to cover (badly) on drums. No one under 50 ever recognized or reacted to it.

Sad.
Does your wife submit to you?

Why is it sad? Do you listen to Elvis Presley or Bing Crosby? Is that sad?

Really?  I'm closing in on 40.  Heard 70's and 80's music mostly on radio in later years after my time and out and around.   I thought all the kids knew a lot of the classics.  Bon Jovi, GNR, etc.  Does a 20 year old guy today really say "No, thanks.  I'll just sit here and listen to Justin Bieber instead."?  Must be something wrong with him if he does.

Don't want to blow your mind or anything, but modern music is more than just JB

The level of f*cking ego behind the mentality of "If someone doesn't enjoy the same music as me, there must be something wrong with them."

Man....I was really hoping this, of all threads, wouldn't devolve into a bitchfest.

I saw VH 4 times. Once with Roth and 3 times with Sammy. Every concert was a masterpiece of rock n roll.

Eddie was a once in a generation star.

My English Comp teacher wrote the liner notes for one of his albums and scored some big interview with him. Apparently they had a pretty good rapport and was trusted when it came to interviews and such.  From what I heard he was pretty sensitive when it came to media stuff, so this was kind of a big deal.

I don't see why not. Elvis is still the King of rock 'n roll.

He died of lung cancer.

My dad did the same.

Condolences for your father, but one, Eddie died from throat cancer and two, how does a tribute thread to Eddie VH connect?

People are just talking about a musician and the impact he may or may not have had on them.  His lifestyle isn't relevant.
