why ARE there so many weird cults in korea? what makes koreans more susceptible to this nonsense than other countries?

One reason I've heard is that with Confucianism there is no paradise and no afterlife, you're born, you work hard, you have your family relationships, you get married, then you die.  So, in the 40s/50s and 60s when Korea was a very poor country, Koreans were working themselves to death but that was it.  There was no 'hope' with Confucianism.  People wanted something more.  Then along came religions with promises of an afterlife.  It's grown hugely since then, and now we have the modern day religious groups and cults in Korea.

I enjoy these discussions.

Problem is, I can only really give strong evidence and proof from my own faith and whenever I start bringing that up, the mods tend to close the thread and I'm left being the guy who wasted 10min typing a reply that just got deleted. So, I guess I'm trying to make an argument as gingerly as possible, by bringing up less explicit examples, avoiding certain words, and suggesting to you what my argument is rather than flat out saying it.

Mods are gone now due to the the three day weekend so now's your big chance to spend 10min typing your elucidating 'Strong Evidence and Proof Islam Is the One True Religion' reply.

When you're done save it so if it eventually gets deleted, it's just a quick copy and paste away from contributing to future discussions.

makes sense but it's still strange to see so many cults around today, especially among educated younger people who grew up in the modern world. but as other users said, cults still exist in other countries too, so idk

"Pastor Jun broke the self-isolation rule and spread false information to deliberately delay virus tests for church members," acting Mayor Seo Jeong-hyup said in a press briefing Sunday.

A conservative pastor who leads a Christian church in Seoul that has become the country’s second-largest mass infection cluster tested positive for COVID-19, health authorities said Monday.

Jun Kwang-hoon, head of the Christian Council of Korea and pastor of Sarang Jeil Church in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, has come under fire for attending an anti-government rally on Saturday while he was under self-isolation orders.

Some 315 members of Sarang Jeil Church were confirmed to have contracted the virus as of Monday at noon.

Last week he claimed he is immune to COVID-19, now he has tested positive. I wonder how much COVID-19 was spread during Saturday's packed protest rally.

Make sure you identify as something pretty oppressed, or you might make the same mistake this person made and identify themselves out of a job.

Could be the Confucian thing of always honouring your parents and their wishes so they get dragged into going along with them to whatever religious things they've got going on.  And considering how long unmarried Koreans live at home with their parents they could be attending these services up until their early 30s.  I know the local Methodist church has a lot of different sub-groups within it and one of them is an 'unmarried group' that meets fairly often, so I suppose they hope they'll marry within the church members.

But the Confucian thing is dying out and I'd think within a couple of generations it'll be gone all together.  Even on my students' school reports (생기부) every year under 'career', they still have what career path their parents want them to have and what career path they want.

The acronym for that being WMAN, which when pronounced, sounds like "women", so you can say that people who don't like your cult hate wmen and are probably misogynists as well.

I guess we'll just add that to Don Hobak's very long list of faults, flaws, and shortcomings. When the time doth come for the Great Pumpkin to once again rise from the pumpkin patch, he will face a stern reckoning.

And we'll all be like:

Joe Rogan is an interesting figure.  Has he ever disagreed with a guest?

I listen occasionally when there is a guest I like on.  I listened to Cornel West and he agreed with him.  But I listened to a show with Bill Burr and they were arguing about masks.  Then, he said he agreed with Bill Burr.  I looked up clips from the show he was referencing, and he seemed to suggest that masks were not necessary.

If he has disagreed with any of his guests, then who did he disagree with?  I didn't listen to the Alex Jones one.  Did he disagree with him or agree with him?

He does disagree with people, he just does it in a polite conversational way, rather than a Kathy Newman style, old fashioned, gotcha method.  You don't need to do it like that when you're having a two hour long chat. I'm guessing people he really wouldn't agree with don't come on the show, believing him to be an alt-right nazi or whatever.
