Daekyo very disappointing.
« on: July 29, 2020, 12:01:23 pm »
Got another school added to my list for second semester due to some new teachers not being hired this fall due to covid.  This school uses Daekyo.  Gotta say I am disappointed with the pickings for ppt activites.  I figured after these books being out for a year and half some of you would have contributed the way I contributed to YBM and Cheonje.  What are you kids doing at the Daekyo schools all day?

Anyways, here's a summary of expressions and vocabulary words for Grade 5 and 6 via a word document.

I found some decent games on another site not to be named  as one of my schools uses this book. I also used templates and added this books vocab. of course it's all on the computer there. I can't get to it for 3 weeks. I have to admit it was hard to make 26 questions for bomb game reviews out of the material.

Yeah, I just discovered that now.  This site is better for many of the other books though.  I will take some of my stuff from Cheonje and YBM and put it into the Daekyo files and reword some of it I guess.  I contribute a lot here and so do a few other foreigners.  But a lot do diddly squat it seems.

I have so many schools and books now due to taking on extra schools.  No new hires this fall due to covid 19, so ed office has us sent to other schools picking up slack.  Still 22 hours though.

I have two schools. One uses Cheonjae and the other uses Daekyo. Personally, I prefer Daekyo (the expressions that they use are more natural to me.), but there are definitely pros and cons to each publisher. For Daekyo, I found more useful materials on Kor Share compared to waygook.

I think both sites have good stuff. I had difficulty uploading stuff and sort of gave up. now that it's not as hectic, I can try again. but I can't get to Daekyo until late Aug. not helpful if you need something now.
I actually prefer the Daekyo DVD book to the YBM one I mostly use. I find most of the phrases they use in both books are not natural for me. and WHY is YBM using the last name Gim and not Kim???

Yeah I'll agree on that last point.  I did contribute to the gr 5 and 6 YBM Kim and gr 3 and 4 Choi YBM as well as the gr 5 and 6 Cheonje.  So, I will take some materials I made for those and modify them I guess.  But no rush.  I did find some okay things on the other site.  I personally prefer to avoid things with complex sets of directions.  I don't like having to explain especially if some co teachers don't translate the directions well.  It's why I stick with certain basics easy to explain.  Just my personal preference.  Nothing wrong with any others.  Especially if you are at a rich school with very advanced kids.

I heard the Daekyo books are the least popular. My school uses Daekyo for 3rd and 4th grade, but for 5th and 6th grade they uses Cheonjae. My coteachers actually say they wish we would have gotten Daekyo instead of Cheonjae because we don't like the Cheonjae books.

I hope you can find some good materials for the books!

Thanks.  I think I found some more since on the other site.  Also, I am transferring a few of my cheonje and ybm materials and rewording them too.

I will have 4 sets of books second semster.  Cheonje 5 and 6 at 2 schools.  One of those schools also has 3 and 4 YBM Choi.  My 3rd school has YBM Kim.  My new 4th school uses Daekyo 5 and 6.  But I only meet each grade every two weeks so I won't have to make much material thankfully.

I prefer the Daekyo DVD to the ones I've mostly used, simply because the voices are much more consistent and generally natural.

With the others, you often see someone who can clearly speak English then they get a voice-over by someone who isn't timed to where the mouth is moving, might be able to sort of speak clearly (usually they don't), and who sounds nothing like the person you see on the screen.

Although "Gim" instead of Kim comes from a change in romanization and some change in Korean pronunciation. Back in the day, everything beginning with "ㄱ" was spelled with a "k". Nowadays, the official way is to spell them with a "g"; hence, 경주; is now Gyeongju instead of Kyungju like the past. And people have tended to pronounce that a little bit more like a "g" over time. So, it seems the publisher went with that, even though most people stick with the "k" because of tradition.

edit: weird text conversion

Reminds me of those old 1970's old Hong Kong kung fu movies they'd show late at night in the 90's on TV with bad delayed sound effects and bad voice dubbing.  A person speaking Chinese and the lips moving different with English spoken over it.  I also remember a person got punched and 3 or 4 seconds later an exaggerated snapping or punching sound.  In one scene a bus slowly came to a stop but the sound effect was a speeding car slamming on or screeching the breaks fast.  My cousin had these weird channels on his cable and we'd watch them and crack up laughing.   Memories.  Ha ha.

I am glad you found some other materials. I don't know how you keep track of everything!

Thank you for the materials you have already made and for the materials you will make. Are your new materials different than what you made in the past? My students are still doing a combination of coming to school and studying online. I am not teaching them in person yet because my school is so big that they can't figure out a schedule for me. Even the Korean English teachers aren't seeing all of their classes when the students are here. But I know when they are here that they can't do pair or group work and can't do activities where they share items or touch each other, so a lot of the activities I did in the past would be out. Have you had to change your materials you make because of that?
