-Mandatory events with no pay
-No paid sick days
-Really weird bit about the pension
-Have to pay for airfare + recruitment fees for your replacement if you quit (I mean obviously in that situation you'd just do a midnight run but its the thought that counts)
-"If they were to give the school a bad reputation from their inappropriate behavior at work or otherwise" as grounds for immediate dismissal (pretty vague and there are 101 ways they could twist this, same with point D in grounds for immediate dismissal)
and, to cap it all off, only 48 hours to respond?

I'm no expert by any means, but this looks like a hard pass to me, especially if you can't get them to give you pension (and even then its still sketch af)

2.2 is already at the very bottom of the barrel esl wise, then they screw you over by not paying pension to top it off.

Yikes!

Bit busy to day to give a full rundown, but there is pension mentioned...

Quote
11. Medical Insurance
The teacher will be covered by medical benefits and national pension under the Korean Medical Insurance Union, and the National Pension Service Corporation, Korean Government Organizations.

If there is NHIC insurance then there will be pension paid.  Both are linked.

Bottom of the barrel? In many places online they said for beginning teachers with no experience it was on the high side. What would you say is a fair price for something like this?

5.

D. The employer will not be responsible for providing pension for the employee due to the based salary pay agreement.

Doesn't that conflict?

Um 2.2 is low even with no experience. I started at 2.4 free housing insurance pension round trip air in 2008. My hours were 1-6 =p granted things have gotten worse, but its 2020 for goodness sakes. 2.2 is like minimum wage back home.

I guess the pay is up to you but theres no way in hell Id work that cheap in 2020.

T.C.

Also will they pay you during the mandatory quarantine? If not youd better bring a little extra cash.

I guess 2.2'd be acceptable if you got the usual benefits, but with this contract you don't.

@Texas things have changed since 2008, I doubt anyone's getting 2.4 right out the gate in 2020.

In 2008 Kim Bap was 1,000 won
In 2020 its 2,500 to 3,000 won.

In 2008 minimum wage here was 3770 won.
In 2020 its 8590 won an hour.

Hagwon owners have a pretty sweet deal probably the only place in the world where their workers wages get cheaper as time goes by.

Keep drinking that kool aid!

Yeh, apologies TC.  In a hurry, I didn't see that other clause.  Not sure how legally they can pay NHIC, but get away with only making the employee pay their half of the pension, which would seem how that clause is written.

Thank you to everyone who responded. For sure I will have to do more research before making the decision.

You all have been great thank you

There is a good article on Reddit on contract reviews that is written by Korean Labor Attorney's.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Korean_Law/comments/fguie1/korean_employment_contract_reviews/

The key points are really the what Social Insurances are you being registered for in case there is another outbrek of COVID.
Also posting the name of the Employer, or the contract for that matter, may allow them to criminal charge you because:
1) Disparaging remarks are a crime against reputation which is part of the Criminal Code in Korea and there is a specific law in the Criminal Act on online posts
2) posting the contract online violates any non-disclosure requirements which may be an automatic violation of your contract terms

If you read the post you will find out that if the clause in the contract is not better than the Labor Standards Act the LSA will apply and not the clause in the contact and "orientation" is to be paid at the ordinary daily wage rates, any penalties in the contract are null and void (there is a Supreme Court ruling on that) so those are "empty words" and the most important item is the contractual work hours (teaching hours have no meaning) and you are working 2 hours of overtime per week give the the hours in the contract.

You should really read the article and the reddit sub has many detailed articles on many many many items of Korean Labor Law

Cheers
