Poly starting salary
« on: June 28, 2020, 10:56:11 pm »
I might interview for a poly job. (Working hours 9-7 )
They advertised the job starting at 2.7-2.8 million won.
I think they also give a housing allowance of 200,000₩.

I have over 5 years of experience teaching at public schools in Korea. My degree is in English.

Do you think asking for 3.1 would be too much?

I've ehard POLY is a lot of work and long days.  In 2007, they paid the same amount.  It was good money back then.  In 2020, for that workload, not so much.  You should be 3.5 million including the housing salary and the extra hours.  Well technically, that is based on you already having 10 million won or so for a deposit on a one room in Seoul.  You should be able to get by with 500,000 won rent maybe a bit more now.  So, 3.5 minus 500k will be 3.0 million salary.  If you're good with children and don't mind young kids, a lot of kindys can be found 9 to 6 and prob less work teaching classes for upper 2.0s to 3.0's or so on some of the job Facebook groups.

I worked at a Poly in 2005 and was paid 2.75.  The next year I was bumped up to 2.93.  That was a good salary back then but they work you to the bone.  I had 48 classes a week plus you get those times you need to do report cards so often end up staying late or using every free minute of the day to avoid staying late.  It has only gotten worse.  I believe the high paying shift is now up to 50 classes a week and kindergarten students are now given homework that you'll mark.  Depending on the branch some places only give 8 vacation days a year split into 4 and 4.  Back in my second year the head office started scheduling even the five day breaks starting from a Wednesday to a Tuesday to screw you out of both weekends.  And you can get all that for the same pay or less that has obviously decreased in purchasing power.  I cannot imagine someone choosing to work at a Poly school these days.

I think each class was 45 minutes in the morning and 50 minutes in the afternoon.  They did give a 10 minute break for dinner which was enough time to think of food.
