Finished visa can keep bank account?
« on: June 18, 2020, 12:50:47 pm »
Basically I am curious for those who finished their E2 Visa and switched to a tourist Visa (Us Canucks have a 6 month visa for tourism).  Will your phone or bank account cut off or could you still keep using them for the rest of the time you're here?  (I am aware of the D10 Visa option if I want to stay and work after.)

As far as I know, the bank account stays open but can be suspended after a period if you haven't used it, say 1 year, and then closed after a longer period. No idea about the phone...

You can keep them open. Bank accounts will close after a certain period of inactivity though, and you'll lose whatever is left in it.

Any particular advantages/disadvantages to leaving your account open after heading back home instead of closing it?

You can keep a few thousand bucks away from the prying eyes of the IRS.

It might be hard to access online without a Korean phone number for 2FA.

Renewing debit cards might be a hassle.

If it goes inactive, you need to be in Korea to reactivate it.
