i've definitely met a fair few koreaboos who teach here who are more concerned about getting a korean boyfriend/kpop than their measly wage.

definitely never met anyone like that even 5 or so years ago

BTS = more applicants = a more flooded market = a bleak future outlook for the English teaching in Korea industry

In the future, as options for employers widen, will those who can’t speak Korean be looked down upon more than is the case today?

In my opinion, yes. Or at least it is quite likely.

So get studying now.

Crack the BTS books.

No, parents don't want native speakers to use Korean in the classroom. Koreaboos at topik level 4 who know sod all about teaching are much more likely to do this.  This is pretty much the case with adults learning English as well. they got more than enough Korean at school and mostly want the whole lesson in English.

In Japan, as the market became more of an employer’s market in the English teaching field, more doing the hiring required (or at least preferred) Japanese ability. Why is that? Once they could afford to be more picky, their standards raised. And want they wanted was applicants who were good at the language. That’s a big leg up there.

almost certainly for the admin side of things rather than teaching. i suppose it also shows an understanding of the culture so there will be fewer misunderstandings/conflicts

Korean universities have been able to be highly selective for years if you believe the message boards, yet I haven't heard anything about Korean being a requirement to get a job there these days.

English is the lingua franca of academia. 85% of the Korean faculty at my university speak passable English. Korean language ability is not necessary.

Japanese ability is highly advantageous for getting a public school job or university job there. That’s because of reduced likelihood of doing a runner and / or capability of doing more admin work?

What percentage of Westerners speak passable Korean? More than before? Could you throw out a rough percentage?

Yeah, weirdos.  I met a girl like that who somehow graduated university at 20 instead of 22.  She got over here quite young, though she looked almost 10 years older anyhow.   She wanted to get a Korean boyfriend then take pictures of her  with him everywhere.  It was really lame.  She was also part very religious, part  leftist in her own way.  Just a weirdo all the way around.  Anyways, she did marry him and drag him to Texas.  I think she wore the pants though.

I guess these types do exist.  But, it still seems a very tiny subset of the population.  0.00001%.  I really can't see the appeal of BTS that much.  Most Korean women would outgrow that by their early 20's anyhow.

Does that mean direct hire there?  Cause I heard many of the dispatch jobs are terrible.  Interact and such.  Though I did see a couple paying 270,000 plus a month.  Most were paying lower and making you stay at the school full time for 8 hours a day while claiming you are part time and get no benefits.  (Yet, you work full time.)  Needless to say, I am not working for them as I wouldn't put up with that.

Anyways, I did hear direct hire and working for the local education office was good if you can get it.  Maybe work for dispatch for a year and if your school likes you and wants you to stay, get them to direct hire you or you're gone.

No, she had a full Bachelor's degree.  Some curriculum in Texas she said let her get High School courses for university credit.  Wish they thought of that when I was young.  Would have been less debt, though I think her parents prob were well off and paid her uni anyways.

As for you, you should do a Bachelor's and a 120 hour classroom TESOL asap.  Maybe start uni next fall.  (Just need to do 2 years?  College credits count towards other two years?)  Then, you can come back here and teach higher paying, though wages even there are not as great anymore.  But at least you have some experience.  So, Vietnam or Taiwan or some other country with a cheaper living cost would prob let you pay off those loans more quickly than here if you borrow for those two years of schools.

BTS has been on Western TV a lot lately. It’s quite possible a full 1% of Americans like them. (Or more.) That’d be three million. (Or more.)

You really can knock some time off college if you go hard in high school. I did the IB diploma and got around a term's worth of credits, and that's only because I didn't do as well as I'd hoped in my higher-level classes.
