That is usually code for "Even though you are legally free to leave for a break, we will require you to stay, feed and sit with the kids, so they can have extra time with you....for free".

Anyway...this thread is about show shitty the salaries are in Korea...and, possibly how shitty Korea is in general.

Don't blame the Koreans for shitty salaries, blame the idiots who accept them. Korea as a place to live, was shitty in my opinion. But I liked where I lived in the countryside.

As far as salaries go, back in 2011 I started at 2.5 million + 150K multi-school + 100K rural + 400K  housing - I found my own proper 1 bedroom nicely furnished apartment (with an amazing landlord and his wife who shoveled fresh veggies from their garden at me by the basket load)  for 250K. My base pay went up to 2.7 starting my 3rd year.

Why are salaries going down? Because punks accept it and in doing so ruin it for everyone.

Do Americans under the age of 60 still use the term 'punk' as a term of abuse any more?  To me it reminds me of Clint Eastwood movies from the 70s. the reason I ask is that I keep seeing it on the subtitles on Korean TV dramas.

I think it's because it's probably the best translation for 놈. Other closeish synonyms like bully, thug, delinquent, rascal, hooligan, ruffian... etc... are probably worse choices. I guess maybe brat could be used, but again that sounds equally dated too.

I saw some similar jobs listed on Facebook groups.  At one time, these jobs paid less than teaching jobs.  Now, they are paying more.  It shows how pathetic some hakwon salaries are.  Though there are some jobs advertised with 2.5 to 3.0 million won a month, there are still plenty of 2.1 to 2.3 (now with one way flight so really more like 2.0 to 2.2).  Every expat and Facebook group, we should be advising a newbie to accept no less than 2.5 million to start and go up for every year of experience.  If they have loans to pay 2.1 (really 2.0) will not help them, especially if American with a bad exchange rate.  They would be better off doing Vietnam or other countries.  Similar salary but much cheaper living cost and ability to send much more money home (even if through western union instead of direct bank transfer).  That is the truth.  I average out into the low 3.0s (not including housing) with renewal allowance and overtime teaching and multiple school allowances etc.  (Though I do need a car so some more expenses.)  It has been good till now.  But with inflation, it is going to eat into what I make if we don't get a raise soon.  Been several years for me.  If I lost my job, no way, I'd find 2.1 to 2.3 acceptable.  I'd have to switch countries unless I got upper 2.0's at least.
I still never got any previous warnings to make me muted.  I never got any reason for being muted.  I guess the moderators of this site are just fat loser assholes who do as they feel.  Just because they feel like it or were losing an argument.  Dumbass morons!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is no reason why any native english teacher in korea should ONLY be making salary from their english teaching job.   Especially for those of us in public schools, we have waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much free time on our hands to not be making extra money doing "other" things.

In an english teaching job in public school, if they wanna low ball us and pay us 2.5 per month while migrant workers now can get paid the same or more doing their DDD jobs, then english teachers need to get creative.   At max, you only have to teach 22 hours a week but most of us don't even come close to hitting that max.  Especially now with covid19, we only have like 6 classes a week.  What are you doing with all that free time you have had??

I have multiple income streams.  There is no way I am not going to use my free time as an english teacher to be making money working on other things at school.  I work on several other online businesses at school while I deskwarm alone for 8 hours a day.

If they aren't going to utilize us and use us well, then I'm going to spend all my free time working on personal things.  It's called NET (no extra time).  You can literally use your school hours to work other jobs online and make more income without using a lot of your own free time at home.  This is a HUGE PERK of the job.  No other job allows you to just sit around free time for 80% of the day.   You can't do NET (no extra time) working factory jobs cuz you have no free time, you are working 95% of the time with the 5% being a lunch break.

So I'd rather stick with a public school english job, get paid full salary AND use the 30 hours a week of free time I have to build my online businesses and make multiple incomes without using any extra time of my own at home.

If you are in Korea right now teaching english and that's all you are doing, I'm telling you, you are wasting your time.  You could be doing 3x or 4x more stuff than just teaching english.  You have so much time on your hands there is no reason why you can't work 2 or 3 more jobs while teaching at school at the same time.

If they paid us more or used us more, then I wouldn't have to work on these other things to make more multiple income....this came about as a result of the so much extra time I found myself having to my dissatisfaction that I had to start pursuing other things I could do to make more income while working at school.
