No new teachers are coming into Korea right now.  The schools want people already in Korea.

That's not what I've heard. Schools are offering quarantine support and shipping in newbies at rock bottom rates.

In some other countries NETs and non-NETs are currently having the time of their lives due to closed borders...some salaries are doubling and tripling because these are the only available teachers around,

Taiwan is enforcing 14 days quarantine, so apparently is China.  Basically all in the same boat as Korea.

I never said NETs were flying into those countries. But to be more specific, schools in China and Taiwan indeed are scrambling for teachers IN country.

There are 40 million unemployed in the US. If anything there is likely to be a flood of people trying to take up esl.

I doubt schools will care about paying for 2 weeks of quarantine if the new hires will accept 1.5.

For starters China isn't letting many people in...including people who are currently outside the country but had valid visas/work permits before the border was shut. There is a 3 month old Facebook group of over 2000 people in this situation...and it is growing by the day.

The only major market I know of that is still accepting entry of foreign workers for ESL and international schools is the UAE. And as of now even they're struggling to fill vacancies from what people are telling me.

The average total unemployment benefit has been $4k a month (because of the extra federal money in addition to the state money). Imagine getting four thousand dollars a month to not work. NorthStar confirmed that was roughly what he was getting. So there's your answer. 40 million Americans won't be clamoring to get into ESL overseas anytime soon. Especially because the layoffs are temporary and even more so because the big unemployment payouts disincentivize looking for work.

If only workers could...you know...get paid a fair wage that doesn't involve them wondering whether to pay for essential stuff like rent, food, healthcare, or starve and/or die so their boss can have another billion added to the other billions he has stashed away in an offshore tax haven.

After being back in the US since the beginning of April, it is obvious what Americans have taken for granted.

Finally someone gets it. I'm so sick of people ignoring the elephant in the room. People blame hagwon owners, the " market " , and some people even blame their fellow workers . Koreans in general can take ideas and ratchet them up. The hagwon owners are just being capitalists.

But we still have people in 2020 citing Ronald Regan baby boomer taking points about trickle down economics .

That is such a weak video. Innovation comes from capitalism? where is your phone made ? how about your computer? Capitalism doesn't invent anything and neither does socialism. the isms determine who gets paid for doing most of the work.

The argument is innovation thrives much more under freedom from government control. China became more innovative when they started relaxing the rules and regulations. This guy wrote a book about innovation recently and gives an interesting talk on it.

Sure becuase one thing we all imagine when we picture China is " relaxed rules ". Surely that is why nearly everything is made there. It's never capitalists fault that they want to outsource there to maximize profits and pay pennies on the dollar for labor. It's always look over there while I rob your back pocket.
