How long do you think we got?
« on: March 25, 2020, 11:46:24 pm »
This is for public school teachers

How long can this go on?

How long can they pay us?

When will we be defined as "non-essential?"

Gyeonggi government wants to give all Korean residents 100 000 won

If this school year goes further than April 6th...... Will we be viable?

Um, we are contracted during our contract period to teach 190 days.  The year schedule may be adjusted but we will still teach our classes for the length of our contracts.

How long can they pay us?  As long as our contracts say so.

What's Gyeonggi $1000 give-out got to do with it?

Sorry, CO2, but I expected better from you.

Yeah, I misread. If it's so little, I can't imagine it matters to anyone, or impacts anyone's job.

Until the end of your contract. We work for the government.

Aren't all the funds for native teachers (salary, housing, severance) given to schools up front at the beginning of the year?

Yeah I read about that 100,000 Won.  Let's hope that public school teachers aren't eligible for it because I don't know how you could feel good about receiving it whilst you're on full pay from your job.  Give it to people who are actually out of work because of the virus.

Yeah, the money for NETs was allocated and provided when the decision was made for the school to have a NET. The money is already there.

What happens when the global economy crashes? What happens when inflation hits 200 percent.

We are always the first to go when budgets come to mind.

What happens when a second surge happens? If the virus mutates.

What happens when your city decides you're a "nice to have" but the 보건소 needs the money.

What happens if the feds need a stimulus package?

It'd be cheaper to cut us all two months salary and say goodbye.

This is what keeps me up at night.

Surely I'm not the first person to think about this. This is the most world defining event in 20 years, and my first as an independent adult.

People are worried.

I agree.
I don't know why some think that everything will happen as their contract says. No matter what kind of pandemic comes or war or even a zombie apokalypse...

Oh how cute of some of you to think that the contract will be honored. We know that not honoring written agreements is kind of par for the course here.

If you're an EPIK teacher you'll get paid... unless there is something that causes the downfall of the government (if the pandemics goes a year perhaps we'll see revolutions worldwide), or they miss a debt payment (which South Korea hasn't done since like 1997).

Call people you love to thank them for all they've done.

Make the most of precious moments.

How much longer do we have to live?

What percentage of our life is over?

Death comes to us all.

Life is finite.

It's scary to think about.

Some good stuff there, think I'll add these questions to my grade 1 introduction class worksheet, cheers L1!

The main thing you learn over time here is you always need an exit plan.  Don't get comfortable and think you've got a job for life no matter how much your schools/teachers/students etc love you.  It just doesn't work like that.  I've survived two culls, but both of those times I was ready to move on, but didn't.

The way I see it, if you started your new contract this month, then you're fine for the year.  Your school has received budget for you for the year.  It came from central government, down to your provincial government so there is too much there to try and pull it back now.  Next year would be a different kettle of fish.  If your province is running on the bare bones of foreign teachers like Chungnam is, then I doubt there'd be more cuts.  Chungnam did these culls years ago so axing more would not really save that much.

But being Korea, you never know.

Forming an exit plan, C02? How about growing your  YouTube following to the point it can be your main source of income?

If it comes around to the government clawing back on budgets to get money we'll have bigger problems to worry about. My big concern is the value of the won.  Nothing I can do about the currency of my eventual severance, pension and key money.  It's stuck in won.

The won will be fine against the Canadian dollar but against the American dollars! Yikes!
