vs.

I have heard such a beautiful story before.

1. Grammatically speaking...both sentences are correct, right?
2. If the second sentence is grammatically correct, wouldn't you say that it sounds a bit awkward?

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, both are grammatically correct.
The latter sounds awkward because that particular construction just isn't used without the negative (it's not colloquial).
