Republicans want $850 Billion bailout
« on: March 19, 2020, 03:40:25 am »
Trump wants to send out checks of free money to citizens... ;D How very socialist of him!

Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump wants the government to send checks to Americans in the next two weeks in an effort to curb the economic cost of the coronavirus pandemic, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday.

Yang's response: ''This whole thing is so fucked up,” he said. ;D

But, but, but socialism is the worst thing on earth when it suits trump, the republicans and his dimwit supporters.  But not now?  You know what I like?  Consistency.   :undecided:

Really, it's not socialist.  There's no redistributing, except maybe debt redistribution.  It's really Keynesian.  I'm surprised to see Trump go that route.  But increased spending and lower taxes - through pretty reckless fiscal policy in general if it's long-term - is a proven remedy for a recession.

Trump want to be reelected.

Spend more, cut taxes, give farmers free money, give everyone free money = popularity.

The resultant debt is someone else's problem.

Short term gain is placed above long term responsibility.

No. They'll see it as "I paid some taxes in the past; now I'm getting some of that money back."

It'll be like the winter fuel allowance going to old people living in Spain - cheaper just to give it to everyone than pay for the admin of needs assessment.

The republicans?  Not on your life.  The red states who complain about 'big government' are also the ones who benefit most off 'big government'.  Think of the farmer bailout which helped the trump-voting farmers in red states and that was paid for by the blue states.  The ones who benefit from it most, but then complain about wealth re-distribution being un-american, are some of the most short-sighted entitled idiots around.  But when you bring it up they get all hurt and confused.   :undecided:

Maybe. Americans seem to have a really hard time framing universal health care as "I made an insurance contribution; now I need to use the service that the insurance pays for." Based on the last month I spent there, moderate Democrats and Republicans alike frame it as "Greedy millenials who don't understand economics want something for nothing."

I wish there was a law to have a balanced budget. Running up debt is immoral.

My aunt and uncle are Republicans who work in finance. They were huge supporters of the TARP bailout and while waiting for it, kept complaining about how the government wasn't doing enough. Once distributed, they turned their ire on the new banking regulations that sought to prevent another collapse. Now their favorite topic is how everyone wants something for nothing and nobody will work for an honest day's wage anymore. Last time I saw them I pointed out that it was an odd thing to say when unemployment was at a historic low, and they shifted to arguing that everyone expects a job to be handed to them these days, instead of working hard to go out and get one. Or something like that.

And why not? Obama bailed out the banks to the tune of almost $500 billion and the banks were 100% guilty.

Bank bailouts were loans which were repaid.

I've thought about this a lot over the last few days with the American response, trump's usual fukcing around and also the posters on the board here.  I'm not a markets person, as it's a human construct and that there is a volatility that no one can predict, no matter how much they say they are a genius or whatever.  Also, it's not something I have things invested into, which adds another reason.

But anyway, the posters on here who seem to the ones who care most about the exchange rate are from the US, you can say that they are a majority on here, so maybe that makes sense.  Then you have a president who is one of the worst people to ever live, let alone become president of the most powerful country in the world (my feelings about this human slug are apparent) This same person has bungled the whole response to this outbreak.  He even said a few days ago, “we have a problem that a month ago nobody ever thought about.”  We did!  But you called it a hoax.  fukcs sakes.

The fact that he could still be elected if the markets are good just seems crazy to me.  Are Americans that obssessed with money that the damage done in some many ways to some many different aspects of society are not important?  He could be elected again, just if the markets are good and the 401s are in good shape?  To me that seems superficial and wrong.  There is so much tied into so many ordinary peoples' lives linked to the markets. It's become a greed race and it doesn't matter how you win.  But now with what is happening, it's obvious this is such a ridiculous way of doing things.

Feel free to shit on this, it's just things.  Cool.

Then David Pakman explained very well about this and how a different set of circumstances would have meant that people wouldn't need to be given 1000 dollars.... (I am aware that Obama gave a handout too)

About 7 in 10 white evangelical Christians approve of the way Trump is handling issues related to the coronavirus outbreak, including 52% who strongly approve of his performance, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted over the weekend.

About 45% in general approve.  What does it take?!?

Oh please.  Trump called it a Democrat hoax and said it would magically disappear.

How can any thinking person approve of that?

Trump called the Democrats' characterization of his response a hoax, not the virus itself. He also was trying to be optimistic before the full impact had hit. Admittedly he didn't do the greatest job on this, but he's seeing similar results to other western leaders, in a country that is 3-5 times more populous than theirs and substantially larger as well.

If you want to talk bad responses, look at the EU leaving Italy hung out to dry.

Clearly this virus was deliberately concocted and released by democrats hellbent on destroying Trumps re-election in November.

Trump is doing an incredible job under very trying circumstances and as is typical, the Democrats are finding every way possible to worsen Trumps progress.
