What precautions are you taking against coronavirus?
« on: March 02, 2020, 12:44:56 am »
Just wondering.

Have you stopped attending group events? taking public transport? travelling to other cities?

I wash my hands a bit more frequently, try not to touch my face, but otherwise pretty normal. I'd have been wearing a mask at this time of year most of the time anyway due to the crappy air.

Generally, yes, I'm training at home and at the track, instead of the gym (I need to focus more on endurance anyway). I avoid large crowds or gatherings, I did that before the virus so no real issue there. I have my own car, so not using public transport doesn't really affect me. I'm spending more time at home, which is fine as I've got a bunch of post-grad work.

Otherwise, I'm really not worried. As long as your hygiene is on point and you're regularly sanitizing your hands when you're out and about (as you should), you should be fine.

Mask wise, I've got a few n95s that I've been rotating instead of throwing away. With the global mask shortage, that's pretty much what everyone's been doing and their effectiveness is moderate, at best. I just wear them out of etiquette.

Nothing about my daily life has changed at all, really, because I was already doing a lot of the suggested behaviors to begin with. I don't touch my face at all, and I wash my hands a lot in general. I also wear masks outdoors on bad air days, and, as long as I have the time and energy, I usually walk vs. take public transport. I do still use public transport for getting to work and back home, though, but since the panic the buses have been relatively empty. People are still out and running around of course, but, whereas I used to have to stand on a crowded bus, I can now sit in comfort with maybe 2-3 other people in seats on opposite ends of the bus. And I've never liked crowds, so I actively avoid them in general. Even when going to the cinema, I tend to go at night when there aren't nearly as many people; however, there haven't been any movies playing in my local theaters since the virus broke out that I'd be interested in seeing anyway.

The only thing that I'm doing different, really, is putting on a paper mask before leaving my classroom, and keeping one tucked in my coat pocket for whenever I want to go into a store. And I'm only really doing that more for public peace of mind than I am for protection against the virus.

Calisthenics and plyo, now's the perfect time to train your muscles using different movement patterns. Stop looking for excuses to slack! Go train!

I'm required to wear a mask all day at work now. I've had the audacity to sit at my desk sans-mask a couple times, but that's been met with swift reminders to cover my shame.

I also get my temperature checked at work every morning now, along with every other teacher here. The fun part is they're using an electronic ear thermometer, but they aren't using disposable covers or changing tips ever. We all get the same bit stuck into our ear. Remember, kids: Hygiene isn't as important as the appearance of caring about hygiene.

Sigh.

Haha yeah I was ready to refuse the ear thermometer but luckily the nurse was wiping it each time with an alcohol swab.

You should legit complain about the thermometer. I actually think some staff will be sympathetic and take your side.

Judging from preachy reddit posts, here are the precautions you need to take:

- Get a Masters or ideally already have one
- Get a PHD
- Get published
- I mean, just get a better job really, like me!!!!
- Have loads of savings that you can live off in the case of an emergency like this.  Twelve months of rent or something should do.
- Don't bother wearing masks.  Pointless
- Lift heavy bro

Correct.
________

The natural human response to a strange, new disease making its way to a neighborhood near you is to feel anxiety and want to DO SOMETHING. That’s why many people have been buying up and stockpiling masks. But even if you could buy any in the midst of global shortages, should you?

No.

And if you already have masks, should you wear them when you’re out?

No.

Even if there are COVID cases in your community?

Even if there are cases next door, the answer is no, you do NOT need to get or wear any face masks—surgical masks, “N95 masks,” respirator masks, or anything else—to protect yourself against the coronavirus. Not only do you not need them, you shouldn’t wear them, according to infection prevention specialist Eli Perencevich, MD, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine.

Well, what about if you HAVE the virus and don't know it?

Having the mask may help protect others that don't.

Yeah we've all read the millions of articles telling everyone not to panic and that wearing masks is actually worse than not wearing a mask.  If I'm in an elevator with five other people, I'm going to wear a mask.  If anything, it's about social etiquette and trying to be a good citizen.  If it puts other people at ease then wear a mask.  The foreigners bragging about going out and about without masks are the typical "quirky", "lookatme" kinds of people which we don't need right now.

I will wear a mask because I am not a d1ck. However, Koreans don't give a sh1t about social etiquette and being a good citizen. It's all "Me Me Me" until some event brings them all together as "Uri Nara".

true but i think a lot of people think masks will prevent you from catching it altogether

i don't believe everyone here is trying to be a good citizen. most of the time nobody gives a shit about others in public spaces

I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. The office distributed facemasks and I threw mine in the garbage cuz that's its most effective use.

They're making mountains outta molehills.
