Coronavirus is not to be taken lightly due to the nature of the rate of transmission, however,
it is not actually as deadly as MERS or SARS (just for comparison).  It does have around a 92% recovery rate.
Most of the deaths are the elderly or people with underlying health issues.

The other factors to take into consideration are the amount of stress it will place on hospitals and the medical systems of these societies (which have implications on their own), and also the economy (many will be affected by the lockdowns and businesses, small-timers, will be heavily affected and may even go under).

It doesn't help that the news constantly shows a daily ticker/counter of how many infected and how many dying.  It really jacks up the panic in the general population because they don't do that for other diseases that have been killing humans by the millions per year.

Just to put it in perspective:
9-10 million people die every year from cancer (about 25,000 per day), with 23 million new cases per year.  Imagine seeing a daily ticker on these stats.
Another 9-10 million people die every year from heart disease (25,000 per day). and about 400 million diagnosed each year globally.
Someone is murdered every 60 seconds.
800,000 deaths per year by suicide, 2200 per day.
Car accidents take 1.25 million deaths per year, 3400 per day.
Drowning 360,000 per year (900 per day)
Even the common flu kills 60,000 per year.
other respiratory illnesses take 3 million deaths per year, 8000 per day.

These are all CDC or WHO data.

It's just to keep it in perspective.  Coronavirus is serious and must be treated so, but let's also not forget
that while they plaster all these stats on the news daily to really inform us but also to scare us and make us panic, we've been dying from a lot worse things right now and nobody even bats an eye or worries about those other causes of death.

Stay safe and healthy everyone!

MBC formally apologized for airing incorrect information ㅡ which provoked public uproar ㅡ during a broadcast by investigative TV program ``PD Notebook'' on the safety of U.S. beef.

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2009/06/117_26501.html

The report touched off public anger over the imports of U.S. beef, leading to candlelit protests that lasted for more than 40 days. The protests forced President Lee Myung-bak to replace 9 of his 10 senior presidential aides

actually a couple of my friends live in australia. one is korean and she has lived there for over 5 years now. they visited last weekend and she noticed that so much korean food is overly sweet (including the pasta sauce) and now she can't eat it. but she hadn't noticed it before moving to aus. i guess people are just used to it here

martin the shrink, martin ex-machina...

You'll actually notice that it was after you directed a barbed comment at Tyler who comes across as amiable, good-natured and self-effacing.  You could learn something from him.   :undecided:
I was agreeing with Tyler, genius.

Also, I don't understand why you have a problem with me pontificating on a variety of topics when you do the same damn thing.

Seriously.

And while the police one is funny in its punchline...boy is it cringey with all we know about police practices back home. Once again it shows what a massive racial bubble these guys grew up in. It really needed to be 3 parts, the two they had, and then a final panel that at least keeps it real.

Smoking burger one is fine, it's just the reverse of "Butt Out!" from South Park and their sendup of Rob Reiner. Zombie one is actually above average for the strip.
