We are the last generation that will ......
« on: January 26, 2020, 12:44:28 pm »
I saw this on another forum and it had some interesting replies. Now I think waygookin can have their say.

I already think Iím a generation removed from many teaching EFL in Korea being 42.

That being said hereís some highlights of what was said-

tell the time using an analogue clock- apparently in the digital age some teenagers canít tell the time

- use paper money- this is something I strongly oppose as I donít think the government should know everything about you nevertheless we are headed there

- learn a foreign language. Worryingly for us TEFLERS apps are getting great at giving real time translations

- have any use for ďnude magazines ď such as playboy and the like. ( a somewhat funny one but true also I guess)

Any additions?

Analog clocks: My 11 year-old son loves watches. I donít think this is going anywhere soon.

Magazines, in general, are on shaky ground if they havenít moved to digital format.

I am of the last generation that will...

- have grown up and gotten a university education without the Internet;

- have had as a youth ridden one's bicycle on the side walk, against traffic, without a helmet, wherever we want, without ever getting stopped by the police;

- remembered a world without video game consoles, cable TV and call-display telephones ("Who is it?");

- gone trick-or-treating without fear, en masse, the whole neighbourhood participating;

- have had parents and grandparents dislike pop music in favor of classical music or jazz;

- gotten up early Saturday morning to watch cartoons and then in the afternoon and on Monday talking to friends about it, recounting funny parts, acting it out;

- thought it's cool to collect hockey and baseball cards;

- considered terrorism as only news stories about distant places like Ireland and Israel;

- seen defendant lawyers as good but government lawyers as either bad or just bureaucratic (movies, TV and books never made the DA or government dept such as the FBI and CIA look like heroes - Law & Order came along and changed everything);

- traveled on vacation without thinking about flying as an option (planes were too expensive, just for honeymoons and rich people);

- felt the earth is a growing, developing, safe and wonderful place with a bright future (pre-Chernobyl, pre-Valdez oil spill, pre-Challenger explosion, pre-talk of "the environment" as something independent of "the environment of _________" of gorillas, of pandas, of a given local community of people);

- likely gotten a public pension.

Pre all those things there was the likely prospect of a world nuclear war which IMO was scarier than climate change.

Remember being told to go outside and play all day during the summer holidays.

Remember seeing people smoke inside.

Remember having town centres with shops where people used to buy stuff on a Saturday.

Remember pubs that didn't serve food or have giant TV screens.

Remember having to interact with a person when checking in for a flight/buying fast food/shopping in a supermarket.

The threat of a nuclear end to life was a potential one we thought was NOT inevitable.

We had a belief in technology, in progress, in humanity, in economic development, in space exploration, in a bright future for humanity and other life on earth.

The threat of destruction may have seemed imminent in some people's eyes but there was a lot of hope and belief in the future for humanity and other life.

Life without WiFi, WiFi was the biggest game changer.

Also the traditional Canadian wilderness playboy magazine collection that everyone knew about.

... or cathode ray tube TV.

Yeah. I can remember our new Zenith color TV, the best one in town, in the mid-70s.

My friends had B&W and would come over and marvel at it.

By 1980 everyone had color.

By 1985 I was complaining to my dad about how old our tv was. He refused to ever buy a new one, citing he did buy the best and it was still good enough for us.

In my experience, fourth graders in Korea can absolutely read an analog clock.  Okay, there might be one or two in a class.  It's rather more difficult to get them to tell the time in English, but somehow they manage it every year, the fact is they almost all can do it by the end of the unit in English--like 10:40, 6:10, 3:20, etc.

Again, this is my experience.
