"Another one" - DJ Khaled

Hi, this is my first time looking for a hagwon job and I'd appreciate any feedback on the contracts I've received so far.

About me: Unrelated BA, CELTA, 3 years with EPIK, currently outside of Korea.


School 1:

The Term of Contract

This contract will be valid for a period of 12 months beginning March 1, 2020 and ending February 28, 2021. The Teacher has until 12 p.m. the next day after termination of this contract to remove his/her belongings and to vacate the school provided residence.

Required Teaching Hours

The Teacher is required to work for regularly scheduled hours from Monday through Friday. (Mon, Wed, Fri 9:00 a.m. to 5:40 p.m. / Tue, Thu 9:00 a.m. to 6:20 p.m.) Full-time teaching hours do not exceed 120 hours / 4 weeks. The Teachers may be required to do overtime work depending on the schedule. Class preparation times do not count as teaching hours. Classes and teaching hours are scheduled by the School’s sole discretion.

Teacher’s Duties

Teaching the assigned classes. Following the advice and direction of the School. Developing supplemental materials as necessary. Attending weekly Teachers’ Meetings and annual Parents-Teacher Meetings. Attending the School’s events, such as the annual performances and seminars twice a year. Performing other teaching related duties as assigned. Teaching his/her class with passion while in class and must not take a rest, or engage in behaviour or talk unrelated to teaching. Being punctual for the beginning and remaining present until the end of the class. Must not have nor use a cellular phone during class. The School could take pictures or videotape the Teacher teaching classes or related jobs. These pictures or videotapes would be used for the School’s guides, website, brochures, or pamphlets.

Payment

The School will pay a monthly salary of 2.3 Million Won, in Korean currency, for regularly scheduled hours. The salary shall be paid on the same day of each month, the 10th of each month, and shall be paid in Korean currency, won. Teaching hours (30 hours /week) that exceed the contracted hours are remunerated at 12,000 won per 45 minutes. The Teacher should provide a Korean bank account number to the School for direct deposit. Upon completion of the one-year contract, the Teacher shall receive one month salary as a severance payment. The Teacher shall be paid 30,000 won per day during the orientation period (9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.).

Housing

Housing (single and furnished) is provided in the form of an apartment at the School’s expense. If the Teacher has his/her own housing, the school will provide the 500,000 Won monthly housing allowance. But it will be included to his/her salary. Utility fee including the maintenance fee, water, gas, electricity and etc. will be deducted from his/her salary every month. The Teacher must pay repair charges due to damages caused by his/her carelessness and all outstanding balances of his/her bills before his/her contract termination.

Airfare

The School shall provide a one -way ticket to Korea. The School is to provide the Teacher with an economy class ticket from the teacher’s nearest international airport to Korea. A return flight ticket or refund will not be issued. If the Teacher wilfully leaves the school before completing half of this contract (6 months), the cost of the airfare to Korea must be reimbursed to the school. The price of the ticket paid by the school will be deducted from his/her last month’s payment. If the Teacher is hired in Korea, then the School does not provide the airfare.

Vacation

School observes Korean National Holidays. In addition to holidays, the teachers will receive 10days of paid vacation each year. In general one in summer and one in winter. If Korean National holidays are included within the vacation time, they will be counted as paid leave days. The specific period of vacation days are pre-set by the School. (It depends on school schedule but usually, summer vacation is between last week of July and the first week of August, winter vacation is between the last week of December and the first week of January) When the school’s scheduled vacation time is less than 10 days, as initially contracted, the school will compensate for each vacation day untaken. i.e. When the contract says you get 10 days of vacation, but the school schedule affords only 8 days, then you will get compensated for 2 days of vacation untaken. The compensation will be made at the end of the contract period with 50,000 won per a day.

Sick Leave

The Teacher shall receive TWO sick days. The Teacher shall submit the doctor’s note within the day after his/her absence. If the Teacher fails to submit the doctor’s note within the day after his/her absence, the amount of salary for the day will be deducted per day from the monthly payment. If the Teacher fails to submit a notification to the School, a warning letter will be issued.

National Health Insurance and National Pension

10.1 – Health Insurance

The School will pay 50% of the premium for the Teacher’s health plan, which is provided by the School and administered through the School The Teacher is responsible for paying the other half of the premium for the Teacher’s health plan, which will be deducted from each monthly salary. The Teacher will be responsible for the rest of the cost.

Is this legal? I'm guessing this is perhaps a warning sign?

10.2 – National Pension

The Teacher will be covered by the national pension under the Korean National Pension Service. The School and the Teacher will make regular contributions to the Teacher’s pension fund, as stipulated by the rules and regulations of Korean National Pension Corporation.

10.3 – Option

The Teacher has the option to opt out of CLAUSE 10. Please sign below to opt out of CLAUSE 10. In case of opting out of CLAUSE 10, the School will deduct 3.3% of income tax from the salary each month. The option is unchangeable once the Teacher has chosen the option. By signing here, I am fully aware that I do not receive aforementioned benefits.

Taxes

a. The Teacher must pay applicable taxes as required by Korean tax law. The residential tax rate is 10% of the income tax to the government of Korea. The Teacher is responsible for paying the residential tax to City of Seoul.

Termination Notice and Evaluation

13.1 The School reserves the right to dismiss the Teacher for the following reasons: Neglect of the duties stipulated in this contract. Frequent absences and tardiness from work. Having received three warning letters. The inability to perform the duties stipulated in this contract. Engaging in criminal conduct or in misconduct. Use of illegal substances shall be cause for immediate cancellation of this contract without recompense or exception. Use of alcoholic beverage during working hours shall be cause for termination. Use of alcoholic beverage prior to work that adversely affects the Teacher’s ability to perform these stated duties and responsibilities shall be cause for termination. Any conduct which interferes with or compromises the teacher’s of another employee’s work performance shall be cause for immediate termination of this contract. Disciplining students with physical punishment of any kind will not be tolerated and will be cause for immediate termination of this contract.

13.2 In the case that the Teacher engages in a criminal offense or misconduct, or has received more than three warning letters, the School has the right to dismiss the Teacher immediately without giving him/her 30 days notice. The School agrees to give THIRTY DAYS notice prior to dismissal if the reason for dismissal does not apply to the session 13.2.a. If the Teacher wants to terminate the contract on the day of completion of the one-year contract or before its maturity, he/she may do so only if he/she submits a EIGHTY DAYS advance notice in writing to the School in order for the school to have enough time to find and hire a new teacher. If the Teacher compiles with the section 13.2.c, and wishes to leave and go to another job, the School agrees to give the Teacher a “Letter of Release” upon written request. The school is willing to provide the highest quality reference letter to the teachers who are seeking employment in Korea or abroad once the teacher has faithfully and diligently fulfilled the aforementioned conditions in this contract.


School 2:

Term of Contract
1. This contract is on fixed term of contract from 17 February, 2020 to 23 June,2021.
Salary
2. This contract is for full-time employment. While this contract is in effect, THE SCHOOL agrees to
2,200,000 won monthly. THE SCHOOL will be pay the salary is paid into the Employee’s local bank account in Korea every 5th day of the month. On months when the 5th of the month falls on a weekend or a national holiday, THE SCHOOL will pay the employee the preceding business day.
3. Taxes and Deductions in compliance with Korean Law shall be withheld automatically
from the Employee’s monthly salary. The deductions will include income tax, residence tax, and health insurance and so forth if any, from monthly and severance payment.
Working Days and Hours
4. Annual working days
THE SCHOOL may require teachers to attend in-service training during vacation time, to a maximum of 10 days, as its expense. Contracts for holders of responsibility posts may specify more attendance days.
5. Classroom Contact Hours
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 17:00. The employee is expected to teach six or seven classes a day during a 5 day work. The length of the classes may vary according to the schedule, but there is never expected to be longer than six hours per day of instructional classes. In addition, the employee is expected to supervise an extracurricular activity for students up to 3 days directly following the last class. The employee is also expected to follow daily, weekly, and monthly duties such as recess, shuttle bus, and after class dismissal. The employee acts as substitutes for sick colleagues additionally for short-term absences. Teachers are expected to show appropriately professional flexibility in this matter.
Leave
6. Paid Vacation
12 days of paid annual leave which is a week winter break and a week summer break shall be given to the employee with national holidays throughout the year.
7. Sick leave
Sick leave is permitted only with the prior approval of the Director. Up to 5 days per annum of Sick Leave may be taken by the employee for illness and medical treatment, on full pay. Absence from work on sick leave must be justified by a doctor’s certificate of being unfit for work. Further paid sick leave will not be granted. Further sick leave must be taken as unpaid leave, within the parameters outlined in this contract in the case of protracted absence from work through illness, THE SCHOOL will agree with the employee to terminate this agreement, under mutually acceptable terms. In the event that the employee is absent for any reason during the initial days of the contract (orientation/open house), he/she will be charged leave without pay
8. Bereavement Leave may be granted at the discretion of the Director, as necessary, up to 5 working days per bereavement, on full pay. Bereavement Leave is granted in the case of death of an immediate relative: spouse, parent, sibling, child, and parent-in-law, or grandparent.
9. Unpaid leave may be granted on written request for bona fide purposes, at the discretion of the Director. Salary deduction for unpaid leave is made at the per diem rate. In all cases, THE SCHOOL calculates the per diem rate as 1/ 30 or 31 of monthly salary.
10. Total leave in any one academic year may not exceed 10 working days.
11. Departure from THE SCHOOL prior to midday constitutes one day’s absence. Departure from THE SCHOOL between midday and 16:50 constitutes one half-day’s absence.
Benefits
12. The employee will be covered by the Korean National Pension and Health Insurance Service, including any and all benefits therein included. The costs of this coverage will be borne half by employer and half by the employee. Payment will be made by monthly deduction from the employee’s salary. Pre-existing conditions occurring with the employee gets injured from an accident of a mishap that occurs outside the course of normal work duties which are duly prescribed by THE SCHOOL policy or regulations, the employer shall not be legally obliged to pay to the employee any hospital and medical costs being in excess of those covered by medical insurance which the employer highly advises the employee to obtain. However, it is the moral responsibility of the employer to help and take good care of the employee in the event such accident or a mishap takes place.
13. THE SCHOOL will pay severance to the employee upon completion of contract.
14. A one-way flight of 600,000won will be provided to the Employee.
15. The THE SCHOOL will provide the employee with a rent-free apartment or studio depending on the situation at hand with a kitchen, a bathroom. The THE SCHOOL will make every effort to accommodate the employee within walking distance of the Institute.
Job description and responsibilities
16. The employee is employed as Teacher, a professional to discharge responsibilities at the behest of the Director of the THE SCHOOL. Responsibilities shall include, but will not be limited to:
Aspects of Teachers’ Work
Classroom Practice
l Lesson planning, delivery assessment and recording
l Returning student work with constructive feedback
l Subject/class responsibilities
l Adapting work to ESL and Learning Support needs
l Homework responsibilities
l Pastoral care of students
l Classroom environment and display
Commitment beyond the classroom
l Attendance at and contribution to meetings
l Participation in professional development activities within the THE SCHOOL
l Attendance at parent consultations
l Attendance at official THE SCHOOL functions
l Commitment to a student after-class activity maximum 3 times per week
l Attendance at and contribution to monthly assemblies and students activities
l Teachers may be required to accompany students overnight on educational visits and excursions for up to two days per academic year. These days may include weekends.
Team Work
l Parent liaison where there are student concerns
l Professional courtesy towards others staff members
l Collaboration with colleagues
l Collaboration with ES Land Learning Support colleagues
l Collective responsibility for THE SCHOOL policy implementation
Administration
l Report deadlines
l Budget responsibilities
l Curriculum documentation
l Collaboration in curriculum development as necessary
Professional appraisal
17. The purpose of professional appraisal is to assist the employee in his/her professional development. Teachers participate in annual professional Appraisal.
Termination of the Contract
18. Termination by the employee is subject to three months written notice to quit, submitted to the Director. If the employee terminates the contract with in the first three months of initially being hired by THE SCHOOL, the employee with reimburse THE SCHOOL the cost of the airplane ticket to come to Korea, provided that the ticket was purchased by THE SCHOOL.
19. Termination by the employer is subject to three months written notice to quit, submitted to the employee by the Director, following two written warnings being issued to the employee, signed by the Director. Termination by the employer may include but shall not be limited to the following reasons:
l Unprofessional conduct
l Incompetence
l Insubordination
l Unsuccessful professional appraisal
l Breach of contract
l Criminal Conviction
20. In the case of forced retrenchment THE SCHOOL will provide a letter of recommendation to the employee, and assist the employee in fining alternative employment in the Republic of Korea.

Both of these jobs are a big step downwards from EPIK.....

The Part timer at GS25 makes this for over time I'd tell them to shove that where the sun don't shine.

The Part timer at GS25 got more for his/her orientation......

Utility fee including the maintenance fee, water, gas, electricity and etc. will be deducted from his/her salary every month. (No thanks)

It's cheaper to give you 0 vacation days than to give you time off because you will be working for 50 lousy dollars a day during that time. I mean seriously? 50/9 hours a day=5.55 dollars an hours that's like minimum wage from ten years ago...... At that point I would probably have blocked the recruiter that sent me this job offer and sent them a nasty message...... but lets keep going.

Yikes! 9 hours a day for 2.2? You gotta supervise students during recess, ride the bus with them etc and teach 7 hours a day for 2.2?! You earn a measly 12,000 won an hour if you calculate it out lord almighty that's cheap!

Conclusion!

Hard pass both jobs. Block the recruiter who sent you this garbage, you and anyone else can do better than 9 hours  a day one way flight ticket for 2.2-2.3 this is bottom of the barrel garbage no one else wants to touch.

Thanks for taking the time to read them and give feedback, really appreciate it. Didn't realise some things until you pointed them out lol and so the search continues......seem s harder to land decent hagwon jobs than I expected...

You've already left Korea you said, why on earth would you want to go back for minumum wage, 1700 euros?  Surely there are much better opportunities for you back home? If you don't mind teaching elementary school level then you could probably start tomorrow.

You could work at McDonald's in a lot of states back home and earn significantly more than this especially when you consider the exchange rate.

You could start at 2.5 with jlp (epik) not including rural bonuses and multiple schools bonus. Just fyi

No 2.7 is the max. I’m on it.

So it starts at 2.5 and ends at 2.7? That's odd.

It's also strange that a recruiting company - the main JLP recruiter in fact - would advertise a salary lower than it actually is.

The OP has 3 years teaching experience so they would start at level 2, I believe.

**Edit- you have to be at 2.5 for two years to get to the level 1 pay of 2.7, so you cannot start at that salary.

I'm also on 2.7 in JLP, which is the max.
