Shoplifting charge - help needed
« on: December 19, 2019, 08:22:45 pm »
Hey all, new here. I've been living in Seoul for about 3 months now and I was approached by a pair from the International Office of my university today saying the police would like to talk to me about a shoplifting accusation in Hongdae. Currently, they are expecting me in Mapo Police Station tomorrow morning at 9.30am. I have been advised not to go without a member of the International Office by a friend as this seems very suspicious.
If anyone could give me any advice on this and point me towards any lawyers, I would really appreciate it. The university are providing a translator for me so that's covered.

Did... Did you shop lift?

If yes, why would you do such a dumb thing? Record the conversation and take someone along with you.

If no, Record the conversation and take someone along with you, deny it wholeheartedly, ask who made this accusation, where the evidence is etc etc...

Good luck and hope you get a big apology from those involved if you are innocent! Hope you get what you deserve if you are guilty.
Haven't you got some pictures of birds to be jacking off to, son?

Yeah only you know if you're guilty. But regardless be very careful as there has been a lot of police impersonators trying to scam people out of money. Make sure you are going to a real police station and definitely bring someone with you. You can also contact Seoul Global Center for help.

Law works differently here.  Tell them you didn't steal anything and that you will not go in to talk to them.  Police have no power here.  Some lazy cops may try to accuse you to settle the case.  I just wouldn't go in and tell them no and that I didn't do it.  One of my friends was going through a divorce and he accused her of something and the main police called her to go in.  She said "no".  and never went in.  They never did anything else about it.

good point on the scam and making sure you go to an actual police station. I have heard you can ask for a translator but it might be better to bring someone along you trust and know, if possible.  I would also demand the CCTV of you "stealing", if this charge is valid.

This is pretty fishy. If the police really want to question you they'll either go to your home, and question you, or go to your home and take you into custody. I say don't go, and if they are for real they'll come and get you.

Don't go. If they had any evidence you'd already be in the police station.

If they knock on your door don't let em in either. If they are serious they'll bring the entire metropolitan police force to your gaff the next time.

Contact Lawyer Hwang on Facebook or directly. She is an English speaking lawyer that gives legal advice to foreigners.

She has a far better understanding of Korean law than a bunch of strangers on the internet.
