Caustic guitars shred the tips of my fingers when I play acid-jazz.

This list going to be HIGHLY subjective and personal. What are you rating these top 5 on? Compositions? Technical prowess? Signature phrasing? Impact? Popularity?

If we're going to go by the guitarist who made the greatest impact on Rock, for example, that would be Hendrix. He pretty much revolutionised the way guitarists approached and played the instrument, particularly, by blurring the lines between lead and rhythm playing.

The only 'Top 5' guitarist category I could list would be the top 5 guitarists who, personally, had the strongest influence over my playing throughout years. Some of them might not be the most popular, influential or well known, but they had the greatest impact on my guitar playing career.

5 - A2C
4 - Eric Johnson
3 - Kurikinton Fox
2 - Steve Vai
1 - Guthrie Govan

5 is way too short a list, I'd love to include guys like SRV, Andy Timmons, Masahiro Aoki, Hidenori, Paul Gilbert and B.B King.

If I had to pick the greatest guitarist alive right now, Guthrie Govan would have to be the man; he's simply decoded everything about the instrument.

Guthrie pretty much mocking 'feeling'

Vai getting as close as anyone can to the sound of intercourse

K-Fox, the Godfather of video game covers and an absolute alternate picking wizard who knew how to make a strat SCREAM!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz3RF4AcY7s

EJ, the man who has the prettiest and completely unmistakable tone

A2C, good God! His vibrato is out of this world.

It's 5, but f*ck that. I have to include SRV, where EJ's tone made you think of angels and heaven, SRV's kicked the sh*t out of you. How this man played strings the width of firemen's hoses is beyond me.

I could never get in to Govan. His technical brilliance is unmistakable, naturally, but his music itself has never really done anything for me. I've tried several times to make myself enjoy it, because I feel like I should, but I'm always left feeling a bit flat.

I can certainly relate to to that and respect that opinion, it was a difficult decision to put him at the top. I don't think Govan is the best composer, not by a long shot, but it's his unrivaled understanding, versatility, knowledge and ability on guitar that puts him at the top of my list as the best guitarist.

See, that's the problem with these lists. I'd define the best guitarist as someone who has made the guitar an extension of themselves, this includes everything from being able to play phenomenally, to knowing the best way to change strings.
Someone else might define it as the guitarist who wrote and performed the catchiest song on guitar.

Best composer would have to be a totally different list, with its own problems.

Haha, yeah, definitely. That's why I went with a list of 5 virtuoso I actually like, and a separate list of 5 guitarists I like more for their songwriting and influence on my playing these days (a list of the guitarists who influenced me to play early on would be completely different, haha).

As soon as I started thinking about this I knew I couldn't narrow it down to five. Too many different styles and eras. So I'm going to do pre- and post-1980, though there's definitely some crossover in the eras. I guess it comes down to when the guitarist was best known, or did their most celebrated work.

Pre-1980
John Fahey
Ron Asheton
Link Wray
Tom Verlaine
Wilko Johnson
Chuck Berry

Post-1980
Steve Albini
Andy Kerr
Robin Guthrie
Poison Ivy Rorschach
Keith Levene
Sir Richard Bishop

A top 6 would've been better.

Joe Satriani
Jimmy Page
Angus Young
David Gilmour
Brian May

A lot of folks can play the guitar amazingly well but they don't create music that resonates.

If you have never heard of this lady there's no shame. However, I'll guarantee you've heard her playing.

Carol Kaye, musician extraordinaire. Universally admired by the absolute best in the business. And a woman in a very man's world at the time.
