Is my pay too low?
« on: October 20, 2019, 01:22:10 am »
I was just offered 3 positions and this one was the best, both in their offer, their school, and the location (Mokdong). I've narrowed it down to 1 because the other two were getting kinda dumb with some lower pay and even a Mon-Sat work week.

This contract is basically
2.2mil
Health & Pension the usual
Starville officetel provided (about 15 min by bus, looks decent) *they haven't told me the deposit amount yet
Airfare paid ROUND TRIP, paid by reimbursement
Hours 9-6p, 1hr lunch without kiddos, total approx 160 hours a mo, 107 of those are teaching
Overtime is 15,000-20,000 per hour
5 summer and 5 winter paid vacation days decided by the school, paid holidays but they didn't give me a number
1 paid sick day, 2 unpaid emergency sick days
Co-teaching system

I posted the whole contract to r/teachinginkorea and I can post it here as well, but most comments were saying that 2.2 was not enough for the hours I would be working. From my understanding, 2.1-2.4 is pretty standard for someone of my experience. I have a BA in Mass Comm and a 120hr online TEFL and no classroom experience, so I didn't think anything was wrong with the pay until others said so. Should I/could I ask for more? Is this a decent contract?

That pay IS low.

The teaching hours are decent at 25hrs per week, try to negotiate zero deskwarming time (or as close to zero as possible) for that level of pay.

They’re lowballing you on OT pay...have it at 35k per hour...so not go below 30.  Make sure your paid vacation days aren’t mixed with weekends of national holidays.

In all seriousness nearly everyone’ s wages in Korea are too low. I’m looking at you EPIK, Jlp and most hagwons.

2.2 is actually 2.1.  It use to be round trip flight.  Now one way flight, you must subtract 100,000 from your salary each month to pay the way home.  2.1 was an entry level salary 12 or 13 years ago with a much cheaper cost of living and a much better exchange rate.  The salary is too low.  You will not save much money or pay off your student loans too quickly with this.  There are Facebook groups for jobs.  You will need to search.  But a standard 8 or 9 hour day is still long enough for a better pay.  I see some that are 2.4 to 2.6.  I also see some jobs that are 2.5 to 3.0 for similar hours.  An 8 hour day as you teach some of it and plan for part of it.  There are other countries nearby allowing more savings potential.  Similar wage but much cheaper living cost and better exchange rate.  Demand a big raise next time, seek another job, or change countries.

No experience?

2.2 is standard.

Quibble about 0.1 or 0.2 at one's peril.

More important: reliable pay? nice apt? enjoyable environ?

Are you suggesting that folks assume those qualities/standards are the norm in Korea?

What is wrong with making more money, when it is clearly justified?

They aren't and shouldn't be mutually exclusive

Seriously, Van Islander...I would like to know why you would think 2.2 is standard, for no experience....and defend it.   Wasn't 1.9/2.0 "standard" in 2003, with only a 300K increase from then?  Seriously, V.I.?

(let's not mention the E-2 visa slave chains, the poor amount of vacation days, the overall corruption within the hagwons, and now the trend of those/these hagwons not even offering an upfront flight)
