Corner store embezzlement, thanks very much!
« on: September 17, 2019, 02:24:18 am »
Once again, tonight, i bought a ton of stuff from a corner store after midnight and got a discount. 50,800 won? I show five big bills, hesitate, give six, get it back with a headshake and a smile, a '0' on the cash register suddenly, the transaction cancelled (as any of us ESLers who had retail jobs in uni know very well), no receipt, no change because of the sudden 800 won wave off.

This has happened PLENTY OF TIMES over the years here. GS, CU, 7-Eleven, etc., all have done such.

One of my undergrade degrees was in mngt and the "shortage" in retail was huge, almost 20%, as it was too easy for low-paid employees to pocket sales and cancel them, or refund them with forged signatures.

I have gotten some great "discounts" in Korea since '02.

The biggest was a huge 87,000 won Christmas party candy/chocolate/snack purchase for 150+ students at a great corner store late one night and when the total was rung up i received a HUGE smile from the old guy, then i decided to add a bottle of vodka for me and the crestfallen teller hesitated, punched some buttons and waved me out with it free, no receipt, the 87, 000 won in his hand not the til, no total, the bottle MUST have been 20,000+ won. Huh.

I have had various lesser such deals since. Including tonight, minutes ago.

It's more likely they were just giving you an informal cash discount, since they don't have to pay tax or card fees on that income. It's highly unlikely they're stealing it from the register (if they're an employee).

You know what I'd do when something like this happens?  I'd try and put it back into the local economy somehow, for example, paying traffic fines.  Simple.   :undecided:

Make that 3 of us. Of course, one of my undergrad degrees wasn't mngt, whatever that is.

Management.
I'm guessing your degrees weren't in ABBR either.

I would only ever use MGMT for that. Is that just me?

Apparently "MGT" is an acceptable abbreviation for it too.

Personally, I prefer TMNT.

Yeah :-) I didn't get that. As mentioned below I only ever saw management as MGMT

I have no idea what ABBR is!

How old was the guy at the corner store? If he was old, it was either a friendly discount or tax evasion.

If he was young, then he was probably skimming the till.
