LOL I wouldn't step foot in that corrupt shithole country.  If you''re an American you are just asking to get extorted, beat, or who knows what.  With the tension between the two countries, even normal citizen will take aggression out on you bc of their brainwashing.  Then you have the police ready to make you life hell just for fun..  no thanks jeff.  No China for this guy.

I read the Reuters piece your link mentions earlier today. What little there was left of me that thought "maybe China could still be a viable option" was put completely off by the bolded bit here:

"Switzerland-based Education First (EF), which runs 300 schools across 50 Chinese cities, has seen a “significant” increase in detentions in China for alleged offences including drugs, fighting and cybersecurity violations"

I suppose I can't say for sure that that means people could get in trouble for using a VPN to access censored sites, but just knowing that that could be the case is enough to keep me away.  Shame, because at one point I had even started brushing up on / increasing my familiarity with Chinese characters, on the off chance I decided to move there some day. Given the way things are going, I don't think there's even an off chance anymore.

Here's the Reuters article, for anyone interested:

As an aside: I don't know if OPs can change their titles, but this thread might get more attention if the thread title gave more relevant information.

Indeed, any Westerner who heads to China right now is a fool.

China is returning to a hyper-nationalist state and mindset not seen since the cultural revolution. As a tourist, rather go to Taiwan, you'll see all the beautiful ancient Chinese buildings and artifacts preserved and as a bonus, the people are 1000X more civilized.

In ust loved how you had some people on here who would talk up China because people wouldn't spit or whatever and Korea was such an oppresive hellhole. This is the kind of stuff that puts everything into perspective. Give me Korea's problems any day of the week over China's. Korea doesn't jave Uighur reprogramming camps and if Koreans want new leadership they can stage mass protests without the police and military cracking down.

Since we're all in Korea, it kind of goes without saying that we think Korea is a far better place.

If any foreigner commits a crime or does drugs in China, they have to be arrested no question about that.

However, if people in the Chinese government want to liberate Chinese schools from foreign influences to
the point of getting rid of foreign English teachers, then perhaps we should boycott all Chinese restaurants
in our Western countries.

Absolutely terrible idea.

First, the whole "foreigner influence" is simply a weak pretence. The CCP's greatest fear is that their own people will rise up against them, so, rigid indoctrination and censorship strategies are put in place. OF those strategies, forcing the narrative that all westerners are sex-crazed, doped up rapists seems to be a favourite. Whenever China gets in a spat with the West a few foreigners in China conveniently wind up with drug, espionage or whatever charges and are paraded all over the news.

Secondly, the best weapon the west has against China is that of Democracy, freedom and an impartial legal system. The CCP can only use fear, money , lies and intimidation to keep their citizens in line and buy influence... it's effective, but only for a while.
Never in a million years will the CCP beat the west in an ideological war, the west has already won that fight, no need to restart it.
By being hostile and aggressive to Chinese people the west simply gives the CCP more ammunition to rally Chinese people under a hyper-nationalist banner and strengthens the CCPs influence.

What should the west do? Trust in it's legal system and be patient. The CCPs aggression over recent years is a sign of desperation. With an imminent housing bubble crisis, an explosive situation in HK, human rights condemnations, Huawei, Trade war etc. the Chinese economy is sitting on a MASSIVE bomb. When that bomb goes off, they wont have the money or influence to bribe anyone.
Just wait...
