South Korea to send 50,000 tons of rice to North Korea
« on: June 20, 2019, 04:11:33 am »
Quote
South Korea said Wednesday it plans to send 50,000 tons of rice to North Korea through the World Food Program, in its second aid package announced in past weeks as it seeks to help with North Korean food shortages and improve bilateral relations.

At the same time, Moon is begging Kim to sit down and meet with him. Is the rice a bribe or the result of beautiful letters from Kim?

China is sending food aid as well while XI will meet with Kim.

The Xi-Kim summit may also be another sign that an anti-U.S. united front is emerging among China, Russia and North Korea old Cold War-era allies. It's unclear if the nations will openly challenge Washington, but some believe that North Korea wants the restoration of such a trilateral alliance. This week's summit comes after both the North Korean and Chinese leaders visited Russia separately in recent months to talk with President Vladimir Putin.

Kim seems to be substantially strengthening his hand in any "deal" with trump.

Bloody hell how much rice does SK have?

1 ton = 20 X 50kg bags...or 50 X 20kg bags

1000 tons = 20,000 X 50kg bags...or 50,000 X 20kg bags

50,000 tons = 1 MILLION X 50kg bags...or 2.5 MILLION X 20kg bags!

That's enough rice to feed the entire population of NK for at least a year (given their current consumption rate).

And when you factor in the extortionate prices of domestic rice in SK (a 20kg bag usually costs around 35k won and up)...they're giving away 50 MILLION kg of the stuff? Something doesn't sound right.

Production was somewhere around 3.9 million metric tonnes in 2009. It has been decreasing in recent years but not by that much. Domestic annual consumption is around 60 kg per person. So they produce around 3.9 million metric tonnes and consume a bit over 3 million tonnes (51 million pop. * 60 kg/person). Korea is a net exporter of rice. In terms of how much the government has on hand, the USDA report I found stated that the South Korean government had 34% of annual domestic consumption in stockpile back in 2015 and purchased a total of 15% of that year's harvest (so the government was holding over 1 million tonnes, or 1,000,000,000 kg).

For the government they are now dealing with the side-effects of a successful program in the 70's and 80's to become self-sufficient. Back in the 70's annual consumption was over 130 kg/person and production was approaching 6 million tonnes. They accomplished this with massive purchase support programs (where the government purchases then stockpiles/re-sells grains to increase or moderate prices). The problem they have is that while production has dropped 30% from all-time highs consumption has dropped 50%, some of the excess is exported, some turned to livestock feed, and some sits in government silos.
