another mass shooting

Ehm, I guess after 20.000 incidents this year, this type of news will disappear from the news cycle very rapidly, because what Trump has to say about Mexicans is obviously far more important... :undecided:

Virginia is one of the easiest states to buy guns in.

Cold comfort for the friends and families of the deceased.

Perhaps Martino is right about the USA being  a dangerous country to teach/work/live in.

According to that table Syria 2.2 and Afghanistan 6,3 are as safe as the USA...

So what you mean to say is Afghanistan has a higher rate of murder than the global average and higher than that of the United States.

As a Westerner, it'd be especially dangerous to be there.

The Syria stats you are quoting are 2010. That's pre-war - almost ten years ago.

In the United States - a huge country - there's quite a disparity in safety.

Compton, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis, and parts of New Orleans have a lot of world star hip hop gang bangers. With guns. Not safe to go there. But most of America is safe. I don't know a single person who was murdered in the U.S. Nor does anyone I know who lives/lived there.

Serial killers and those responsible for mass shootings in America are OVERWHELMINGLY angry white men...

No hip hop stars among them.

American homicide rates per 100,000

20.9 for blacks

2.6 for whites

Defining mass shootings as 2 deaths is laughable.

When someone shoots to kill MULTIPLE STRANGERS (not gang members)... 26 of 31 mass shootings were committed by angry white men.

I thought a lot of these mass shootings were people getting revenge on their ex work colleagues, people at their school etc Like the latest one?... so not always strangers.

Also there's this to consider

Quote
It’s also important to note that the Newsweek and Mother Jones analysis only examined one of the three types of mass shootings—public mass killings—which also happens to be the rarest type, though the kind most conforming to social assumptions and expectations.

I guess you and gogators' favourite kind

Quote
26 of 31 mass shootings were committed by angry white men.

And the majority of  the gang shootings were committed by laid back black dudes?

So to summarise, if you focus only on the rarest of the three types of mass shootings, white people have committed 82% of them compared to the 72% of the population they comprise.

Neither of you mentioned the serial killer stats.

Mate, I think that in a different life I'd be wearing several knives on me if I had seen several of my best mates getting stabbed near my house. Environment plays a part here, but attacks which we find shocking are not gang-related black-on-black crime, but when people shoot at innocent people indiscriminately.

How many of those were black and how many were white men?

Instead of what is shocking why not examine what poses a real risk? The statistical odds of a white or Asian American being killed in America is very low (mostly because they tend to not live in or even ever step foot in the most impoverished neighborhoods).

Yet you said America is a dangerous place to live and work.

It's not. For the most part.

Marty had told me it was dangerous to teach there.
But yup, all I know about the States is from watching 60 minutes which often focuses on the 'problems' faced by the working poor.

Most mass shootings are not committed by white men. The media, however, only focuses on a small fraction of mass shootings.

"Seeking deeper insight into the phenomenon, The New York Times identified and analyzed these 358 shootings with four or more casualties, drawing on two databases assembled from news reports and citizen contributors, and then verifying details with law enforcement agencies.... Over all, though, nearly three-fourths of victims and suspected assailants whose race could be identified were black. Some experts suggest that helps explain why the drumbeat of dead and wounded does not inspire more outrage.... Michael Nutter, a former Philadelphia mayor, who is black, said that society would not be so complacent if whites were dying from gun violence at the same rate as blacks.... About a third were provoked by arguments, typically drug- or alcohol-fueled, often over petty grievances..... Another third of the 358 cases — and the most common in cities with more than 250,000 residents — were either gang-related or were drive-by shootings typical of gangs."

Michael 'Nutter?'

So more white people committing mass shootings =  angry white men's fault, more black people committing mass shootings = complacent, racist white men's fault.
