What exactly would have prevented this from happening? Given the asymptomatic transmission of COVID-19, the only way this would have been prevented from entering the US is for an instant travel shutdown the second news of this disease was available. This would of course, have been politically impossible and gotten the administration accused of panicking and racism. Since it was happening during impeachment, it would have been seen as Trump deflecting and creating a new crisis to distract from the proceedings.

The alternative would have been mass testing of every single person who entered the United States and them being immediately quarantined upon entry for 21 days. This would be logistically impossible and again, would be accused of xenophobia and racism. People cite Korea's mass testing but Korea has tested only something like 5.000 people out of 1 million. That's an incredibly small percentage. Their primary success has been with surveillance of people through their smartphones and purchase histories. Something that again, if the Trump administration were to use, would have been seen as totalitarian and an invasion of privacy by Americans or perhaps "stigmatizing the ill".

And then people ask, why didn't Trump take it more seriously? Well if you look at when every other European leader started taking it "seriously" it's the same time Trump did. Everyone was waiting to see if  China would contain this before completely grinding their economies to a halt. Was this going to be "the big one"? Or was it just going to be like Bird Flu or SARS? Grinding your economy to a halt is a really big step. It is a bell that's really hard to unring and you don't want to do it unless you are sure.

Bottom line: Rational people look at the circumstances and the choices available and conclude that the outcome we have now is the one we would have had, regardless of who is in charge. Stupid people think Trump should have had a magic crystal ball and taken steps that would have gotten him pilloried by the public and accused of being a tyrant madman. When asked what Trump should have done they say stupid things like "Well, not cut the CDC!!!!" Which had what effect exactly? How does that prevent transmission by asymptomatic carriers? Or things like "Had Masks!!!!" And the way you'd get enough Americans to wear them is??? or even "Have testing kits!!!!" And the way you get enough testing kits and administer them to exceed the gold standard of Korea is???

It's real easy to criticize when you aren't in command.

Stupid people think like the nonsense above... amongst some things like the thing below that smart people would consider....

Quote
Having combated the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, Ebola, Zika, MERS and other such threats, many health experts and the Obama administration not only foresaw such risks but prepared for them.

Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser, blasted Trump for comments such as “you can never really think” that a pandemic like the coronavirus “is going to happen.” She mentioned the 2017 session as one of many instances of the Obama administration’s efforts to help its successor be ready for such a challenge. She also slammed the Trump team for dismantling the National Security Council section that would play a lead role in organizing the U.S. response to a global pandemic.

“Rather than heed the warnings, embrace the planning and preserve the structures and budgets that had been bequeathed to him, the president ignored the risk of a pandemic,” Rice wrote. (Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton, who oversaw the dissolution of the NSC’s global health security and biodefense section, has defended it as necessary streamlining, countering that global health “remained a top NSC priority.” Trump, when recently asked about the reshuffling, called the question “nasty” and said, “I don’t know anything about it.”)

But Obama aides say the Trump administration’s fumbling of the coronavirus outbreak is partly rooted in how unprepared — and in some cases unwilling — it was to engage in transition exercises at all in late 2016 and early 2017.

Also where were the Democrats during all of this? They didn't do much of anything either. They control the House. They could have done something. Instead they were focused on impeachment.

That's the best you can come back with?  You really should get tested because this is also nonsense.

Well obviously we should accept with out question the word of an Obama official. No bias or agenda there!

It's a point. Congress has the powers of legislation, oversight, and appropriation. Under the American system of government, it is THEIR responsibility to introduce laws. As the majority party they had that power. While coronavirus was spreading, they were focused on impeachment.

They made a choice. Under our system of government they have a significant amount of responsibility and therefore a significant amount of blame.

Democrats and European leaders weren't lying to the public, insulting politicians who were sounding the alarm and trying to provide care of their citizens (i.e., Inslee is a "snake"), flogging miracle cures, holding unhinged rallies in which they minimized the issue,  contradicting leading medical experts, tweeting insane nonsense and shouting at reporters who asked uncomfortable questions.
And what difference did it make? They all have had major outbreaks as well of varying severity.

How well is he doing compared to Macron, Conte, BoJo, Merkel and Sanchez? Better than some of them for sure.

Smart people judge someone against what another person would have done under similar circumstances and since our response is rather similar to those of the rest of the western world, Trump is somewhere in the average of responses.

Stupid people judge someone compared to an imaginary ideal where hindsight is 20/20 and someone is capable of making perfect decisions. Are you smart or stupid?
Another pointless analogy.

Speaking of stupid people, how about these two?

"A Phoenix-area man has died and his wife was in critical condition after the couple took chloroquine phosphate, CBS affiliate KPHO reported. The additive used to clean fish tanks that is also found in an anti-malaria medication that's been touted by President Donald Trump as a treatment for COVID-19."

"We saw Trump on TV -- every channel -- & all of his buddies and that this was safe," she said.
"Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure."

Too much sun, too much TV, or too much liar in chief?

Well, didn't she say "Don't listen to Trump"?  Which is, of course, good advice.

U.S. numbers are more trustworthy / accurate.

Never fully trust figures coming out of North Korea, Russia, or China.

I guess you could draw comfort from that when you surpass China.

I mean, more than  81,171 Coronavirus cases  and  3,277 deaths would feel much better when you can trust your numbers.

With over 8-10 000 new cases a day and the current steep curve of new cases, it is a distinct possibility soon.  Nice for trump to be bored of all the restrictions (which aren't even in place nationally ) and his 'let's go to work.  our country wasn't built to be shut down' nonsense.  Seriously?  All he cares about is the economy and his re-election.  You know if he'd handled this outbreak competently and being humble about failures would have been his best chance of re-election, so now he's blaming everyone else.  His 'press conference' where he tried to hand Bill Hemmer and Deborah Birx a piece of paper with an attack on Andrew Cuomo says it all.  They refused so he did it himself.  And then talking about the flu mortality came up with a stupid martin style whatabout 'more people die in automibile accidents, but nobody forces car companies to stop manufacturing vehicles.  fukcs sakes.

Now, you have things like this..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCSDEilLllM

He'd be willing to die for the economy?  America is gone.  They've been watching too many hollywood films if they think this would make a difference.  Other countries can get it under control or introduce restrictive measures to control it, but America from the top-down is bored of trying to fix it meaning that governors!!! are on tv saying they'd like to die to save the  economy.  There is a global perception questioning the intelligence of Americans (trump being elected was a big one), and things like this really do back that up.  Exceptionalist, gung ho and stupid.

That's not the point, what he saying is those countries are lying through their teeth. Today China said they have no new infections which is a blatant lie, there are new cases in Wuhan as reported by the citizens but they dare not confront the authorities for fear of reprisal.

The problem is not only for citizens of Wuhan but for some gullible countries that are in the CCP's pocket and may soon lift restrictions based on this info and the virus will spread even more.

The CCP has proved time and again that their citizens are just a means to an end and that end is to cling to power for as long as possible.

Ask the Uyghurs and the remnants of the Cultural Revolution under Mao where 80 million Chinese died, they will tell you.
There is no known medical cure for stupidity!

Gee I can't imagine any country that's been praised for its response still having stores, restaurants, and bars open. Where could such a country be?

Gee, I can't imagine that a country learned from its last major outbreak in 2015 and worked out its best response and bar Daegu where over 50% of the cases are, there hasn't been a nationwide lockdown. Them learning from previous outbreaks is the main reason the country could still remain 'open'  because they were ready and prepared and sprang into action in early January.  It's almost as if Obama, who oversaw a few virus outbreaks in his presidency, learned from them and created a National Security Council’s global health security office to be ready for an outbreak of this type.  Gee, it's almost as if trump disbanding said taskforce hasn't totally fukced up the response meaning that he's now blaming everyone else and lying his stupid ass off and putting the nation's population at risk.  Easter?

Are you smart or stupid?

You sunshine, are the latter, obviously.

dishonest don, hat in hand, called SK Pres. Moon to beg for medical supplies. Then there's the millions of masks we flew over from Italy. Yet, the US "will never be a supplicant nation."

It's almost as if being an absolute dickwad to your decades-long, long-term 'allies' would mean that they are then apprehensive about helping you out in times of struggle.  Like now, for instance.  Even though those allies are struggling too.  Will he learn anything from this?  Of course not.  He's fukced this up, big time.  He made his own bed. But it's the bed that all Americans have to sleep in too.  Shame.

trump would be hilarious if he wasn't the actual president

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China. It's going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that's going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we're very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it's like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: "Now the democrats are politicizing the coronavirus, you know that right? They're politicizing it…they have no clue…they dont have any clue…this is their new hoax."

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they're happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we're doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They're there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?' Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: ““The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant,”

March 13: "I take no responsibility."

Trump may have been a little slow at the start, but now that things are underway he's found his footing and is generally doing well.
