First "Old Boy.", should have been titled "Oh Boy."

The first Korean Film I actually watched (in an old Movie Theatre that doesn't exist any more...) Was called (in English) 'BEAT"  ['Biteu' in Korean -sorry, no Hangeul] in 1997. A pretty harrowing look at the lives of the Korean youth who DON'T succeed and exist on the margins of society; it focuses on the lives of 3 primary characters and is certainly not a 'feel good' epic.

I followed this up with another film in a similar vein from 2000 (again, in an old theatre that doesn't exist any more - anyone remember the old Piccadilly Theatre in Pimat Gol...?) The film was ( in English) 'TEARS'...again, about the lives of 4 poor, disaffected young people from Garibong slum in Seoul - again, pretty jarring stuff...!

It's actually called "200 Pounds Beauty" -- and I think that was the first Korean movie I saw as well.

My first movie was "Silenced". Still one of the most emotionally scarring movies I've ever seen.

R-Point

I actually saw this three weeks before I came to Korea.

Thought the bit where 'they' were advancing through the windy field, before one 'soldier' just dropped into the field, made me a wee bit scared.

A looooooooooong   time ago before I actually went to Korea I watched "memories of murder" about the murders that occurred in Hwaseong city which I actually ended up teaching in 2008.

I only actually got to see half of it since it was in the days of VHS and the video stopped recording when it was switched off (the film was broadcast at night - mainstream channels would not have a Korean language film on during primetime)

Old boy was my first Korean movie.

My first Korea-related movie however, (back then I literally knew nothing about Asia other than China and Japan) was Best Of The Best. Must've been in the early 90s when I was still in primary school.

I'm still waiting for a single Korean movie to come out that is worth watching. PM me when it happens.

Dude, seriously? A Korean film just won Palme d'Or a short while back. That's literally the definition of a movie coming out that is worth watching.

Sorry, but in this case the problem is you. Korea could put out the next Casablanca and you'd shit on it, not because it was a bad movie, but because it was Korean.

No dude, or dudess, I'm not a troll. I also don't get swayed by Palmes d'Or or any other palmes.

Why? Cuz I'm not a sheep.

What are you saying? Because a group of self-anointed self-important elitist snobs say something is excellent that it is? Really?

'Tis to laugh.

How's the new Purple Blue release doing for ya? Or is it Green Red? Or Magenta Aqua...I can never keep them straight.

That's an interesting assertion, because I heard from Ronnie Omelettes that you do occasionally chew your cud and surreptitiously nibble at the office plants when you think nobody is looking.

But don't feel baa-aa-aad. Sheep are cool!
