Looking for recommendation: Netflix / Blu Ray / DVD player
« on: April 09, 2019, 07:38:54 pm »
Right now, I'm connecting my laptop to my TV to play movies, and I'd like to get a dedicated unit for that.  Blu Ray would be nice, but it seems those aren't really popular in Korea, so just DVD is acceptable.   I'd be using WiFi for this.  Could anyone recommend one?  I don't know anything about those kinds of electronics myself.

I used an old 2008 Mac Mini until I got my PS4 in 2017.

I donít have many disks anymore (CD/DVD/BlueRay); before moving to Korea in 2014 I put the ones worth keeping on a HDD.

Depending on your visual needs, Netflix is okay. But HD on NF is not true HD. A true 1080p bluray will be the best. I know I sound like a snob, but there is a definite difference in streaming and a true HD source that is fixed, like a file or a disc.

Sound, too. NF is not streaming uncompressed DTS Master Audio. If you're using laptop speakers or ear buds, it's not a big thing but the sound difference is there if you are using decent cans or speakers.
ETA 2day 4hour 45min to next reboot.
DO NOT UNPLUG

I donít know if you have current info. But 4K Netflix looks awesome on my 55Ē

And a 4K Bluray will look better than that, hehehe. Again, I sound like an ass, but I take this shit very seriously.

How are my games looking on the big screen?

Awesome, though I donít have much chance to play them.

Of course a local source will be closer to 100% than a streamed source.

Right now, I'm connecting my laptop to my TV to play movies, and I'd like to get a dedicated unit for that.

As in separate from anything else, for which a laptop or video game system would not qualify.

The old MacMini desktop computer had one job... feed the TV. BlueRay, streaming and HDD archives.  Itís too slow to even do word processing on anymore.

K. So I feel like I really shouldnít have had to explain this deeply given the title of the topic, but if Iím wrong and my op was unclear, I do apologize. Iím looking for a DVD/Blu Ray player. Like by LG, Samsung, etc., that has a good Netflix function, not just whatever you can think of that will fulfill that function.

If you play Netflix through the Windows 10 app it's definitely HD and I can get Dolby Atmos as well for the ones made that way.
