UPGRADES: Software and SSL Secured Traffic
« on: April 01, 2019, 06:59:27 am »
PLANNED FOR WEEKEND OF APRIL 6TH

Waygook will be undergoing some changes this coming weekend and there may be some intermittent outages.

Following changes will occur:

  • Software Updates
    Some needed updates will take place on the weekend to address some performance issues.
  • Testing SSL certs
    We've made some changes on the backend, and will be testing SSL encryption.
  • Activating HTTPS protocol.
    This may be reserved for the weekend after, but we will activate the HTTPS protocol to allow users to login securely on public networks.  That means you can visit the site at https://waygook.org/

Note:  SSL won't be forced.  You can still browse the site as normal, but you will have the option to use HTTPS instead of HTTP.  This may change down the line (to secure it further), but as some of the content is embedded from other sites that may not use HTTPS, we will have to first implement a proxy.

Upgrades Completed:

* Software updated
* SSL implemented
* Performance adjustments
* Feature improvement to uploads (check it out if you upload lesson plans)
* Look and layout of site changed

Overall, there's been a lot of work done this weekend to perform these changes.  There's still more to come:
* Layout of the site will undergo some minor changes
* Performance will be tested

I noticed some outages at a certain point where there shouldn't have been any, and thought the servers were crashing, however the service provider we are using experienced some network problems and it caused extra outages... had to happen while I was doing my upgrades!

We have a scheduled window set for server upgrades on the weekend of April 12th.

The upgrades will address two bottlenecks in site performance.  We will be running the system on new machines, and there will be an added 2 servers to the frontend to handle requests.  Much of the prep work will happen before the 12th, but there may be some intermittent downtime on the weekend as we switch over.

Upgrades have been performed ahead of schedule.  We will be monitoring services for any downtime or performance hits.

1. Performance issue in code was resolved
2. We are now running with 6 front-end servers to handle download traffic, a large database, a fileserver, and block-storage.

Additional upgrades:  We are building the database on a high performance VPC, it seems to be part of the crux with site downtime.  We'll transition over this weekend as we had it reserved for upgrades.  If you notice downtime, it's because of upgrades.  We'll perform this after-hours (Korean time zone, UTC +9:00) so it doesn't affect many visitors.
