Travel to the USA during Shutdown
« on: January 24, 2019, 02:10:12 pm »

Do you think it is a good idea for anybody to travel to the USA by air during the time of this long
and ongoing partial government shutdown?

Why or why not?

I am wondering the same thing. I am set to go next week, but I have thought about canceling my trip.

A friend of mine went to the US from Japan last week and had no problems.

I am still going to go, but I hope the shut down ends during my trip.

I think that there is some risk if Homeland Security, Customs, or Airtraffic control walks out. People havenít been paid since Christmas week.

This is awful. Not to mention food banks are running beyond their capacity
because of this.

Life will go on. Things will be fine. Commerce moves on. Government is just a sideshow for business and finance anyways.

Planes will not fall from the sky.

Great time for bribing TSA officials.

Well, yes.
But in the meantime, the risk of being delayed or stranded is real.
As a tourist (or business traveler) I would avoid the USA until air traffic controllers are paid.

Let them eat cake
We've had shutdowns before. The entire country doesn't collapse into anarchy. There might be some delays, but overall commerce continues.

Nothing says poor starving Estates General citoyens like an hour delay on your flight to Vegas.

People need to think about this deeply.

This government shutdown has lasted 35 days, the longest
in US history. Just suppose this government shutdown results
in a breach of security that results in the number of air travelers
being stranded in the USA? Are they going to wait until that
happens to re-open the government?

Belgium went without a government for two years. Life goes on. State government keeps general order. They can always pass a resolution maling TSAs and ATCs in the same category as the troops and keep everything else shut down. Maybe then we'd realize how much is bloated bureacracy that we don't need.

Another bad analogy, another poor excuse.

State government budgets have been cut to the bone by repugnicans; they can't afford to fund the federal government.

What we don't need is a wall from sea to shining sea.

Funding for the government has been approved for 3 weeks. Take what you will from this.

This record-breaking shutdown has ended so we need no more further discussion or arguments.
However with the February 15th altimatum you might say......TO BE CONTINUED.
